We go to both places at least once a year. Napa wines have the BIG sweat fruit. It is complex and very distinctive. I love the big Napa Cabs the best. The peoblem is so does a lot of people, and the wines have gotten to be very expensive. It seams like everybody makes a $100.00+. The price goes up every year. Some of them are the top ratted wines in the world.

Sonoma wineries are smoother, some of the wines are big, and some are more balance. The wineries are generally smaller with names you never heard of; however there are some big ones. I love dry creek and the Alexander valley in Sonoma.

Napa for cabernets only...possibly the Syrahs, the rest of red and white wines are probably better from Sonoma - at least for American tastes which are a bit more inclined to fruiter wines. Best wines for my tastes come from the Russian River area, or the Carneros region.

Soooo much depends on the grape variety and the wine maker that this question is not really answerable.

BTW my favorite red wine is Pinot Noir made by Domaine Carneros (sex in a glass) 8-P -

The VERY best wines come from the Oakville region of Napa Valley.
The most expensive California wines and those with the highest reputation for being consistently outstanding.
If money is no object, try and find a bottle of Screaming Eagle ($1,200 bottle) or Harlan Estate ($350-750 bottle) or Dalla Valle Maya (also about $500 bottle)
Undoubtedly the very best of the best of California wine
Howell Mountain would be my second choice of sub-appellation

Lately I'm partial to Napa, Carneros and Stags Leap. I suppose it has a lot to do with my recent trip out there & having done the majority of the wine tasting in Napa.

I can't say that there's any reason to knock Sonoma though. There's some very nice wines from that part of California too.

I'm not sure which is in the Pinot Noir produced by Willamette Valley Vineyards in Oregon, but I do know that they have patented the "resveritol" that's supposed to be really good for your heart. Their Whole cluster Pinot Noir is awesome - its about the only red wine I would actually ask for. Movrodaphne isn't too bad if you like sweet red wine (it tastes like raisins). Check out Willamette's website

PS I checked the appellation and its 100% Willamette Valley, so I guess neither Napa nor Sonoma.
