I haven't actually done it yet, but I think it's a good idea to let people know what their cars are doing to the environment!!!

i've heard about economic cars and others but we're in danger the temperature grows in an alarming rate about 0.5 degrees every year. are there any solutions to find another way to cool down the planet and stop wasteing our natural sources?

As a non-American I'm amazed of how this issue seems to be linked to political belonging. Is it?

If it is, then why? Isn't this a failure? I mean, of course different partys have different ideas about how to deal with the issue, but shouldn't the climate science itself stand alone from politics?

If you don't live in America I'm still interested to hear if you think this attitude is strong in your country as well.

While the scientific community has a very high confidence that global warming is real and caused by human activities, the lay press has apparently identified no one group that has actually done the most to reduce greenhouse gases. If such a group exists, who are they? What specific steps have they taken to reduce greenhouse gas emissions? Approximately how many tons of carbon dioxide (or equivalent greenhouse gases) emissions have they prevented, captured, or "sequestered?" And what objective sources can you cite to support your conclusions?

A related question is, what are the major barriers--social, political, economic, technological--holding back countries, non-governmental organizations, and other groups (and individuals) from achieving large-scale reductions and mitigations of greenhouse gases and related global warming effects?

The Earth did warm up right?
So was it some sort of ancient civilization that burned fossil fuels and left the bathroom light on all night?
Or, do you think maybe, just maybe there is some sort of natural warming phenonmea that "thawed out" the earth?

If Global Warming Skeptics started to go missing or ended up dead would you consider this a natural progression of the global warming movement?

This movement is after all fueled by a powerfull lobby, would it suprise you if those who opposed this lobby ended up dead or missing? It's only a natural extention of stalinism.

You're thoughts betray you... I know you want those global warming deniers dead!

About 28 years ago scientists began noticing the first signs of global warming for what they were. It took 27 years for the crisis to meet willing ears. One to 20 articles daily were being published about global warming in every newspaper and website, and then something happened. Something that could kill every related scientific endeavor up to this point. The oil and fuel companies began to lose money. Big time. Any smart businessman knows that the only way to stop losing money is to invest a small sum into getting articles into newspapers about themselves. People love to seem well-informed. This love makes them read the odds and ends in newspapers that don't match up with the norm of most articles. All of a sudden, scientists were conducting new experiments, and coming up with dramatically different results! Poo-pah global warming! It's actually all an enormous scam! Hey everybody, there is no more to truth to those ever-inconveniencing truths! Lets go burn natural fuels

Of course the climate changes all the time. But the scientific data clearly shows that this particular warming is not natural.

See:

Meehl, G.A., et al (2004). "Combinations of Natural and Anthropogenic Forcings in Twentieth-Century Climate". Journal of Climate 17: 3721-3727

whose results are summarized at:

http://www.globalwarmingart.com/wiki/Image:Climate_Change_Attribution.png

No theory that contains only natural factors comes even close to matching the observed data.

This is science. "Logical" arguments don't trump data. Neither quantum mechanics nor relativity are "logical". They are accepted by scientists because the results of their calculations match observed data.

"I wasn’t convinced by a person or any interest group—it was the data that got me. I was utterly convinced of this connection between the burning of fossil fuels and climate change.

Since it's politically correct to jump on the Global Warming band wagon, you knew it was bound to happen.
I'm talking about "carbon offsets", or "carbon credits". If you're not sure what these are, I'll tell you.
You send some company money to buy carbon credits. Which means you can still pollute just as much as you always have. But in turn this company "invests" you money into "green" research and development.
I say they invest your money straight to their pockets.
Why couldn't I come up with this perfectly legal way for idiots to send me their money?

I think so i mean data from 100 years is not enough to support a claim. although you will give me the majority of scientist say this claim, the majority of scientist have been wrong before. The Earth is always in a state of warming or cooling we are just in a warming one right now. I feel that someone goverment person(Al Gore) wants another excuse to tax us for somthing. It just also seems like an issue that people would try to use to get votes.

The Vostok Ice Core Samples show that our current temperature is nothing new. In fact it's been warmer several times in the last 450,000 years.

We are just at a high point, a normal position that occurs cyclically. And we can see that just as the temps go up, they come down again quite rapidly. Then after many years, the temps once again go up very rapidly, gaining as much as 10DegC or 18DegF in a short period of time without mans interaction.

Why sweat it now that it's a little warm out? It could be a lot colder, much colder than it is now. Relax, grab a brew, soak in the rays and live life. Nothing is constant, even the climate will cool off again.

I see that since he has blocked most of the top answerers in this section, Mr. Jello has only received 5 answers so far to his question about what's wrong with skeptics. I figure we should let everyone answer this question.

My answer is that of course there's nothing wrong with healthy skepticism. On the contrary - everyone should be skeptical of all information and independently verify it. Skepticism is crucial in science.

However, people like Mr. Jello are not skeptics. They distort the facts, lie by omission, ignore when they're corrected, censor people who correct them, and only seek out information which verifies what they want to hear. The correct term for that is denial. What's wrong with denial is that it allows people to ignore the reality of a situation, no matter how evident it might be.

Anyone else want to provide their opinions about global warming skepticism and denial?

How accurate were the ways that we gathered tempurature 100 years ago.
I dont believe that global warming even exists and even if it does, WHO CARES.
Scientists still cant say why it is happening and still people tell us that we should go green to save the environment.
There is no proof that the car I drive makes our earth warmer yet everyone takes it as fact.

Please comment no matter what your view is.

Apparently nuclear power plants can have trouble operating on hot days because they need a cold water system in order to run.

http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=13818689

Nuclear energy is often touted as a major component of the solution to global warming, but if global warming can cause both hotter water and water shortages - particularly on hot days when energy is at very high demand - can we really afford to rely heavily on nuclear power?

Many today think that global warming (climate change) is the most pressing issue for humanity. What about the methane burp?
250 million years ago, a humungous amount of methane trapped on the ocean floor erupted into gaseous form. The oxygen levels around the world dropped from 30% to 16 % in a matter of weeks. 95% of the species on the planet died. The methane is building up below the ocean floor. It could be used for fuel but it is very volatile. Don't you think that 10% oxygen could be more devastating than 42 degree winters?

What's wrong with being a science skeptic? Do scientist expect us just to believe them without question?

Is it because skeptics demand the higher standards than their peers? Does the extra work just annoy them?

If it weren't for skeptics questioning the majority, we would still believe that the Earth was the center of the universe.

If I am a skeptic like Galileo Galilei, then I believe that I am in good company.

It's 2507, and a small group of civilized, attractive, ethnically-diverse people are holed up over a coal mine in Antarctica, the very last fossil fuels on the Earth. They're holding off barbarian hordes, and when their stronghold falls, it will be the end of civilization.
"Oh what will we do?" they ask their supercomputer. "Oh why didn't mankind begin developing renewable energy resources back in the 21st century?"
The supercomputer suggests a plan: they will build a time machine, and use it to send a robot back in time. Being old movie buffs, they make the robot look exactly like Arnold Schwartznegger. The robot is built and sent back to 1990, and arrives in the high-security area of a government lab. At first, the guards think it's an attack, but they hit the robot with everything they've got (lots of attractive explosions, etc.) and nothing can touch it. Eventually the robot convinces some scientists that it's from the future.

We have no clue if "global warming" is caused by man or if it's causing any problems with the environment. Any time you hear an expert address environmental issues they always use qualifiers like 'could', 'likely', 'probably', 'may', etc....

But there are REAL environmental problems happening today, problems that can be measured, quantified, and resolved.

6 BILLION American Chestnut Trees are now gone, fell to a foreign blight. The American Chestnut was so plentiful, a squirrel could travel from Georgia to Maine without touching the ground. The Chestnut also provided hard mast, a staple for most of the wildlife.

This isn't the only example. Many of our native species are threatened by invasive non native species of plants, incest, and animals.

Why not spend the time and resources in correcting what we know is true, what we can see and measure to repair damage that we or nature has caused the environment?
