Just curious how many people are fans of this relatively obscure and vastly underappreciated genre. Who are some of the jazz artists that have really spoken to you?

I personally like most jazz, from bebop and hard bop to the avant garde and modern. Charles Mingus definitely took hold of me with Black Saint and the Sinner Lady, and it is music that will remain with me forever.

I'm about to be a senior in high school, and this summer I have the chance to buy my own mouthpiece. It might seem crazy to some others, but I used the mouthpiece that came with my Selmer (Model AS500). On top of the fact that I'm lead alto for my jazz band and ensemble, I really really need to get one. But the problem is, I've never had the chance to actually look into all the technicalities of buying a mouthpiece. So...any suggestions? I'll be playing mostly jazz with it. I'm focusing on practicality, but it would depend on how improved the sound would be - I dont' know the exact model of my mouthpiece (the one that came with the AS500, but it says "4C" on it).

I am desperate for help. Lately, I have been diggin' the albums I have listed below. I do not know of others with the same sound. The best description I know of is "post-bop". If you are familiar with any of the music I have listed, and know of more thats likened to it, please notify me.

Andrew Hill-Point of Departure
Booker Ervin-Space Book
Eric Dolphy-Out There
Prince Lasha and Sonny Simmons-Firebirds
Bobby Hutcherson-Components
Tony Williams-Lifetime.

Thanks.

I see replies, on this website, that suggest that Kenny G. is a "jazz" artist. Isn't it really just easy listening (very easy listening), played with jazz band instruments?

For me, jazz is about the adventure of the musicians exploring music and pushing the limits. What do you think about that? Does Kenny G. music do this?

A lot of my favorite rock musicians are influenced by jazz. Could you recommend some good artists for me and some albums from them. I don't really know anything about jazz, so could you also summarize what it's like.
