In addition to The Rippingtons (they are one of my absolute favorite Smooth Jazz groups) some other solo artists for the saxaphone that are good are: Jeff Kashiwa and Paul Taylor (both have new albums out).

I also like Mindi Abair.

There's a group playing right now on the Smooth Jazz music channel of my cable system called 3rd Force that is also pretty good.

Another artist that is pretty good and used to be part of The Rippingtons is Greg Karkus. Also check out an artist by the name of Greg Adams. I heard him not too long ago and he's pretty good. Another one that I would love to listen to an album by because what I've heard so far is good is Brian Simpson.

If you are looking for a Smooth Jazz vocalist that is solo one I would recommend is Michael Franks. His voice is truly amazing. For women I like Rechelle Ferrell and Diane Schuur.

The Rippingtons are similar to Spyro Gyra being an ensemble group that is hard driving. Also check out
"The Crusaders" from the late 80's, early 90's. Their 1988
release " Life in the Modern World" grooves, especially the song "D.C.", which is the epitome of groove.
The "Urban Knights" is another ensemble band that has a great groove to it. And if you can find it, the group "Cabo Frio" is a Spyro Gyra near double. They were from Upstate New York.

If you like Steve Oliver, you would be sure to like this great smooth jazz guitarist, "Norman Brown". His first 3 releases are all great. Larry Carlton and Lee Ritenour are older, but
their stuff grooves too. Lee Ritenour's "Festival" is awesome
and his band for that CD was awesome, Marcus Miller, Dave Grusin & Ernie Watts on the Sax, to name a few.
Larry Carlton's "Kid Gloves" is one of my favs of Larry's.
Enjoy !

Wow! Straobratster gave you quite a few names...many of them my faves. Don't forget Boney James, a great sax man. And Mindi Abair. For something a little different try Jesse Cook. Check the link below.

Try Richard Elliot or David Sanborn, you will not be disappointed. Very relaxing and exciting at the same time. Enjoy.
