our current situation is the teachers union are asking for a 5% increase in salary. Their benifits include paying only 5% into their health insurance and a starting salary of 45 grand in a community where the average house value is 70 grand just so you can gain perspective. Inorder for the school district to accomadate the increase in salary the taxes will have to be substantially increased along with certain cuts which include less honors and AP course in high school. Also they want to have more teachers on the payroll. Currently the average school size in elemetary school is 15, MS 18 and HS 21. Also enrollment has been declining each year. Roughly 20 percent less students yet no teachers have been let go. Do you think this is the problem with Education.

I have been asked to do a short talk and 'question and answer' session at a local secondary school. Without getting into the nitty-gritty of what the subject is, are there any generic things I can do to make the presentation interesting? For example, should I include a Powerpoint presentation, or is that likely to bore everyone senseless?! Any help would be appreciated.

I know the last day of school is the last day, but for students. The very next day after that is the last day for teachers. What most would call teacher closeout. What all goes on during the last day for teachers? Do teachers turn their room keys and roll books in? Also at teacher checkout does the office make an announcement saying when you can leave for the summer? Finally when you are leaving out and/or driving out the parking lot on teachers last day do you feel sad or feel weird, or do you feel excited?

I'm the only black girl in one of my classes and for some reason, the whie kids pick on me and take my chips and stuff that i bring with me to class and the teacher doesn't do anything about it and the teachers aid see's them and doesn't do anything because she favors them. All the white boys in my class do this. I was arguing with them and overheard somebody talking about me going back to africa...I've never even been to africa... They get on my nerves. What can I do to teach them a lesson (basically...revenge) on not to steal my stuff and treat me as if I'm not human without getting any adults involved? HELP!

We had a shooting in the neighborhood, near the school I work at. Two people were killed and now the killers are leaving threats on other people's answering machines-- no arrests yet, but one of the 6th grader's dads was threatened and she heard it.
She is so freaked out now. The police are involved, but she is coming to me for support.
I've just been there for her, holding her hand and listening to her cry and vent.
Does anyone have any good ideas above and beyond what I've been doing?
(I so want to go find those killers and rip their guts out!)

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - Staff members of an elementary school staged a fictitious gun attack on students during a class trip, telling them it was not a drill as the children cried and hid under tables.

Can you believe this??!!!! I can't believe educated men and women who we trust our children with would actually agree to this!!

I am writing ESL crossword puzzles and I intend to have them published as Crossword Puzzles books. I have to use dictionaries for the definitions. I am not certain whether I have to seek permission from the publishers for each and every word and its definition Ichoose to use. Some of the definitions are the same for more than one dictionary.
