Well for class a simple Good Job sticker (even if I am in High School) or a "Great job" on my paper is meaningful. It shows that you actually liked what I did and that I should do it more often. As a High School student when I get back my papers I usually have A's but no "Good Job" or "Keep up the good work". Simple comments like that makes a HUGE difference. As for an entire school like if you're a principal wondering what can you do to reward the students A free dress day, a dance, a sock hop, or pep rally shows that you care about the students happiness and you really notice what the students are doing around school.

Intrinsic reward, where one get the inner feeling of blissfulness by helping someone without anything of materialistic in return. Such reward live in you forever.

Cash is always nice. Public praise is a nice add-on but not a substitute for cash.
