It doesn't matter what subject area or level you teach in, teach it well. You teaching students, not material, and they have to understand, then know and be able to apply what you have given them.
Even though I am a teacher of secondary school English, I've taught a variety of subjects and levels. If you are comfortable or interested in something outside your teaching specialty, and you can transmit that to your students so that they learn, then you must teach it well.
That is the advice one of my cousins gave me: Whatever you teach, teach it well.

The bumper sticker advice: "They don't care how much you know until they know how much you care." Corny, but I've built a career on corny. And think about it. We may not be there to be liked, but if they like us, they will work harder for us, and if they work harder, it stands to reason they will learn more. Let them know you a little bit.
The more pragmatic advice: Find everything you can on Learning Focused Schools. I know, I know...none of like these programs they jam down our throats. However, this isn't a program. The researchers went out and examined best practices based on school performance, packaged it all up, and are now selling it to over-paying school districts.
However, the stuff works. It may be totally plagiarized, but it is very good. Much of it is stuff many of us have been using for years, but if you are like me, refreshers and new ideas are always welcome.

Have high expectations for your students and insist that each one does the best work of which he or she is capable. Give your students a chance to pleasantly surprise you--they will.

1] remember everyone is someone's precious child
2] teach so everybody learns - the visual, auditory, and kinetic learners
3] Don't give up on the 'hopeless kid' as long as he/she is in your class - don't be afraid to refer the ones who need it

Don't bother with the 'students' who aren't interested in their own education.
