I know the last day of school is the last day, but for students. The very next day after that is the last day for teachers. What most would call teacher closeout. What all goes on during the last day for teachers? Do teachers turn their room keys and roll books in? Also at teacher checkout does the office make an announcement saying when you can leave for the summer? Finally when you are leaving out and/or driving out the parking lot on teachers last day do you feel sad or feel weird, or do you feel excited?

Every school is different.
Sometimes teachers have to stay a few days after the kids get let out, sometimes they are done on the same day.
Usually, there is a final staff meeting. Sometimes they have to pack up their classroom and turn in keys.
There is no bell that rings. The last few days (provided the kids are not there) teachers are free to come and go as they choose.
There aren't usually tears or a feeling of sadness as teacher know they still have work and planning to do over the summer.
For me, I am sad to see the kids move on, but I know I will see them again.
Driving out of the parking lot, I usually think about all the things I still have to do. Summer is not such a big break that most people believe it to be. Teachers still work hard during this time.

As a retired teacher I can tell you a lot more goes on the last day of school. To begin with, there's a Staff Meeting discussing class enrollments for the next year. Next, we discuss who has which duties and what the expectations are for each of the numerous duties both for in school and after-school activities. There are always last minute problems which have to be dealt with and new teachers have to be shown the ropes. After that, OSR cards and Registers have to be balanced and signed off. Usually, there's a meeting of teachers to discuss students with Special needs who will be passing on to new teachers, so they can be prepared for Day One in September. Then, if you're a classroom teacher, you have to take down bulletin boards and clean off and wash shelving and blackboards. You have to do a check to be sure that anything you require in the next school year is there in your own classroom or it must be ordered. If you have to change classrooms due to restructuring, that's an added burden. We don't turn in our keys unless we've been transferred to a different school or retired. We always have to get back into the school the last week of August to prepare our classroom and we have Staff Meetings as well. When you drive out of the parking lot, you're just plain exhausted! Excitement happens around the middle of August and the pressure starts when deadlines are established for Long Term Plans, due at the end of week two in September. I cried my last day before Retirement because I knew that I'd be missing the excitement and children. You know, I taught thirty plus years and never once did I ever think my career would go by so quickly. It seemed like I just got started when it was over! I continue teaching doing Supply work. The kids tend to keep me feeling young, at least, so far.

The last day of school for a teacher is the day that your classroom is spotless, All books are accounted for and you have packed and stored all furniture and items in your classroom. The keys are turned into the office, grades are in and your principal signs your check out sheet which you have had to take to the library, computer, music, p.e. teacher and others to sign letting the principal know you owe nothing to noone.

As for how a teacher feels...it is a time of reflection. Did I do my best? Did I prepare my students for the next year? What worked, what didn't?

During the summer months, some teach summer school, others take cruises or just work in the garden. Others travel the world...Teachers need this time to recharge the batteries for yet another year with a group of 'know-it-alls' who will surprise us, unnerve us, entertain us, puzzle us, and yes..even make us smile and laugh sometimes!

I have a whole week after the students leave! We packup so our class can be painted, do paper work and all that other fun stuff. We leave at a certain time. No one tells us when we can go. And when I pull out, or in my case, walk home, I am so excited about summer. Teachers need a break for a reason. School is stressful. I usually get sad when the students leave. But that lasts only for a few minutes.

At my school all the teachers line the sidewalk where the kids leave campus. We play the Hallelujah chorus on the loud speaker and everyone waves to the kids as they leave. I feel like a marionette with its strings cut. I collapse for about 3 days with exhaustion. On the first day of students I still get butterflies in my stomach after 30 yrs teaching.

My last day is the same as the students. I got a memo yesterday telling me when I have to turn things in by and stuff. Our grades have to be in a couple of days before the last day of school. We turn in our keys and we're outta there til the end of July!

Teachers are finishing up the grades and turning them in on those days. Then they go home.
