I am writing ESL crossword puzzles and I intend to have them published as Crossword Puzzles books. I have to use dictionaries for the definitions. I am not certain whether I have to seek permission from the publishers for each and every word and its definition Ichoose to use. Some of the definitions are the same for more than one dictionary.

Check with your publisher on this one. They have copyright lawyers who will have the definitive word. Provide a list of the dictionaries you used, but you don't have to specify which word came from which dictionary. Either that, or paraphrase the meaning of the word so it is slightly different than what appears in the book. You can't actually copyright a word, because it's in common domain. But the dictionary itself can be copyrighted. It's a fine distinction, but that's what lawyers get paid for.
