I am a High School subsitute teacher...i have been for 3 years.

I know what i am doing, but any new tips? I love when teachers leave specific plans that fill the entire period...but most of the time, they let the students do whatever they want which equals good for kids, bad for sub.

It is hard job, let me tell you!! It doesnt make it any better that i am 24 and look like a highschooler myself!!

Here is some advice from my end...tell the class from the beginning that you dont let students go to the washroom...this was the best idea ever. I noticed that like EVERY student had to go and i was sending one after another the whole period!!

The worst teacher I have ever had is my teacher right now. She is dumb. She teaches Writing Study Skills, which barely teaches you anything. My goal is to become a journalist one day, and I am an excellent writer when I try. Obviously I'm not trying to use my writing skills now...Anyway, she always makes us write "journals" on ideas and certain questions and things like that. Instead of learning writing, she's teaching us stuff like comparing and contrasting and description. I would like to think I learned that years ago! Her class doesn't help me at all. On top of all that, everyone compliments my writing, but she marks me down for the STUPIDEST things. I gave the antecendent for a pronoun RIGHT IN THE SENTENCE clearly and obviously, and still she circled the pronoun "one" saying "one what?" Plus, she's really mean. I know I should wait for the year to be over, but how do I deal with someone like her?

What were the things that made you want to be a teacher? Summers off? Changing lives? etc.. and if you are already a teacher, how did it turn out for you- meaning, are the things that made you want to be a teacher in the first place why you continue to teach? I guess I'm asking, did your aspirations and expectations sync with your actual experience?

1. Stop teaching opinion as fact.
2. Stop teaching our kids what to think and start teaching them how to think.
Do you agree or disagree? State your perception pleace.

Its obvious people are posting homework problems on yahoo answers. Why not just look it up in the class textbook, listen in class, or God forbid actually think about it? More importantly, how trustworthy are these answers you are getting from people who don't have anything better to do other than answer your homework problems?

My cousin is studying to be an elementary school teacher and my other cousin is teaching history at a local high school.

We were having a conversation the other day about how “monotonous” the lesson plans have become and how they leave no room for a teacher’s input/creativity/ ...freedom.

Basically, the lesson plans that are given give you STEP BY STEP instructions on what to teach your class. How to teach your class. What to say. What kinds of gestures/ actions to use during a lecture.

I can understand the purpose of this, but I don’t know if I like it.

...also, these “lesson plans” have discouraged my cousin, a little, to become a teacher.

How do you feel about this?

I have been out of school for a few years now, but in high school I had a very special teacher who helped me through a really tough time in my life. I have kept in touch with this teacher since I graduated through a few emails, here and there. I would like to visit him before christmas, and I want to bring him a small gift and a card. The problem is, I want to get him something he will really like. He's a funny guy, so I had the idea of getting him one of those ceramic jars with the saying "Ashes of Problem Students" on it; I thought maybe he'd think it was funny. But before I get something like that I was just curious as to what you thought. So basically, my question is...If a former student who really appreciated you was to give you a Christmas gift..what would be something would mean a lot to you? I know this question is a little confusing, but I'm bad at wording things like this. I just want to get him something origional, not classroom supplies. Your ideas are greatly appreciated

I have a student who, if he makes a lot of mistakes, or is very tired, will become very short-tempered. Every little things frustrates him and he becomes very irritated, even angry. This affects his ability. He then begins to rush through his work, focusing on speed rather than accuracy. Naturally, this causes him to err more often, which compounds his frustration and a vicious cycle ensues. When I've forced him to take a break, he usually expresses annoyance because he wants to "hurry up and finish his work." I'm not quite sure how to deal with this student when he gets in these moods. Any suggestions?
