Pros - vacations, get to work with kids, fullfilling Cons - dealing with parents, NCLB, not enough time My solution after being a classroom teacher for 2 years was to become a school librarian. I still teach, but only have 45 minutes with a class. Being a teacher is not even remotely easy. However if you like to work with kids and are good at discipline, it might work!

I think this depends somewhat on where you live and plan to teach. I was a teacher in Ohio and I loved it. I moved to Georgia and felt put upon. In Ohio there are unions and while never a big union rah rah type person, I now see the need for them. Teaching in GA in inequitable (different teachers teach more or less hours at the principals discretion, different teachers have to come in as much as 30 min earlier -- at the principals discretion....all for the same pay. As for me I had to teach more hours than my other teachers and was required to come in earlier to do "car rider duty".) All of this turned me off. Ask me -- do you want to do car rider duty, or have a stipend for it and I would have jumped at the chance.

That being said......touching lives is the most amazing part of teaching. I taught art and could see kids who excelled in my class gain confidence and begin succeeding in their core classes. That was VERY exciting. I loved middle school when I taught.

Pros: Touching lives, depending on school nice hours, vacation time for taking classes and keeping certificate updated

Cons: Paperwork out the wazoo, pay, nasty kids, parents who take their kids side, even when said child is practically a juvenile delinquint

You do not get paid much, sometimes you have more work than pay and other times too much pay for too little work. You are stuck there for a year, no switching and stuff. You cannot just do it in a deadline you have to do it same pattern throughout the year for a year.
But you do get a exciting fun job and get to meet and change the lives of amazing kids!

In elementary you teach most subjects; in middle school you mainly teach one subject. Kids in elementary are less likely to have an attitude (though some will always have them). In elementary you have fewer students so you get to know them better; in middle school you get to meet and help more kids.
