I taught english in Greece for a few years and I found visual aids were the best way for the children to learn.
Another idea is buy a big pack of post-it notes and stick them to everything in your house with the name of the item written on the post in note and encourage your student to read and say the word eveytime they use/touch the item.
Also check out the site below for some other great ideas :-)

Wow, what a big question!
Depending on the level of teaching knowledge you wish to obtain, there are many different ways to go about it.
On the very shallowest of answers, you can find teaching materials in any teacher's shop (check the phone book), or on the Internet, for example, eslcafe.com (Dave's ESL cafe). Lots of good stuff there. (Of course, that's for English as a Second Language. Most of the sites are about ESL, but I believe they can help a native speaker as well.)
If teaching is a career you wish to pursue, there are several different ways you can pursue this.
One very easy way is to find an English teacher and ask how they teach. Another way is to take a class at the local university about teaching. (I'm sure they have some.) Another way is to go to the library and check out some books about teaching. There are lots out there.
If teaching is really something you want to pursue professionally, you need a bachelor's degree, a master's degree in your chosen subject and a teaching certificate for the state you live in. Or, you can teach ESL overseas. For that, all you need is a bachelor's degree.
In general, there are lots of teaching methods, and lots of teaching ideas. The main goal is to make learning fun and interesting. If learning is fun and interesting, the student is more likely to pursue it on their own. Be patient and kind, and always compliment a job well done.

All natural languages are very easy to learn but very difficult to teach. You can't teach anyone everything about English. The best way a teacher should do is to teach his student how to learn English on his own. First of all, teach your cousin the grammar of the sentence (8 patterns), and common vocabulary (400 words). Eemphasis is on how to devide a sentence into structural parts and how to put those parts back to make a sentence agian and learn how to deal with these structures not knowing its internal structure. Try whatever to make her understand the law of substitution so she can put new words into the same structure she has learned.

A decade ago to learn English, you had to attend costly English classes or purchase course material like tapes and books. Now you can learn English for free from the comfort of your home using the Internet. The BBC and the British Council offer a number of on line courses, which teach written and spoken English. You can also improve your English by watching television programs and reading English newspapers. For more information, visit http://tinyurl.com/qnzpt

the best way to teach is to talk to them always in ENGLISH.
always be clear in your speech. best possible way is to talk to her slowly so that she can understand it and also if she has any doubts she can stop you then and there and clarify her doubts...
try this it will work out in a more easier way
