I have been out of school for a few years now, but in high school I had a very special teacher who helped me through a really tough time in my life. I have kept in touch with this teacher since I graduated through a few emails, here and there. I would like to visit him before christmas, and I want to bring him a small gift and a card. The problem is, I want to get him something he will really like. He's a funny guy, so I had the idea of getting him one of those ceramic jars with the saying "Ashes of Problem Students" on it; I thought maybe he'd think it was funny. But before I get something like that I was just curious as to what you thought. So basically, my question is...If a former student who really appreciated you was to give you a Christmas gift..what would be something would mean a lot to you? I know this question is a little confusing, but I'm bad at wording things like this. I just want to get him something origional, not classroom supplies. Your ideas are greatly appreciated

I agree with you - no school supplies!! Get him something that is thoughtful and shows that you appreciate him. Does he have any hobbies? Does he read a lot? A book that you inscribe could be special. If he's a funny guy, you might find a funny book about teaching. How about something engraved? You can get all kinds of engraved keepsakes, key chains, pocket knives, etc., and I still have an engraved gift I was given many years ago.

I hope this helps.

If you want to give your teachers Christmas gifts, homemade items are best. Do you bake or cook or knit or sew or anything like that? I'd suggest going the homemade route. You could always do a nice Christmas card with an ornament in it. That would likely be appreciated. Do not associate the gift in any way with your request for recommendations. A gift should be given because you want to bless someone, not because you want something from him or her. Then it's not a gift but a kind of payment.

its glad to know that someone like you appreciates teachers like us... just surprise him...do a visit... even without gift...it will make him happy...i know the feeling... if you will give a gift, be sure that he will use it and will not forget you as his student... whatever gift you have, include a letter or a poem saying that you appreciates everything that he helped you... be sincere in writing a letter so that you can say everything you want from the bottom of your heart...
hope that this will help you... Goodluck

One of my students presented me with a unique key ring. It had little flower designs within it and the student told me to look at it closer, when I did, right in the middle of one of the designs was my name engraved!! Soo sweet, love it!
