I like to hear from teachers who have experienced both US and other countries students. I know the teachers our district recruited from India and the Philippines are having hard times adjusting to the US student behaviors. I personally have had little behavior problems from my ESL students that just came to the US from Mexico, China, Africa, etc. compared to the numerous problems I've had with the US students (or even foreign student have have been here a while). I'm trying to figure out if or why there is a difference in behaviors?

My youngest brother is a high school student who has completely lost any motivation to do well in school. He sits at home watching TV or playing on his Game Cube--he is a movie connoisseur and is a pro at video games.

Whenever talking about the future (and granted, he does have 2 years until he graduates), he has consistently lowered his goals. For example, he wanted to be a veterinarian until he realized that science is difficult. He then wanted to join the FBI until he realized that you need a college degree and must meet rigorous physical standards. He now wants to be a cop, because he says it is less strict than the FBI (but it is really just the glorification of TV that has driven him).

I worry about him because of this trend. He was never a stellar student, but I am disturbed by the fact that he is turned off by any challenge. If he realized the tough work associated with being a police officer, he would back out of that too. Can anyone offer advice?

It was written by a thirteen-year-old boy. He was musing about turning thirteen. The essay mentioned his mother, father, and sister. One topic in the essay had to do with cursing. He said if one hit one's own thumb with a hammer, his father could curse, his sister cry, his mother do both, but he, neither. Anyway, who wrote that essay, and where can I find it? It may have been first released in the 1950s or 1960s.

In our school, we don't take showers after gym. Is that normal? Even next year, in High School, you don't. The school system says it puts children in an uncomfterable condition. Do you think that me, and 8th grader, should take a shower in front of a bunch of guys like me in 8th grade? 9th grade? 10th grade? Do you or did you take showers in 8th grade?
