just concentrate on the work and get through it, knowing you won't have him at the end of the year for another class

As a mother who has heard this from four different children (who are now 20+ years in age), here is the advice I gave to them.
1) Don't tune out! What your teacher is saying about the subject matter maybe on the next test. Write what he says. Ask questions if you do not understand.
2) Study the next chapter ahead of time. Teachers appreciate students who take the time to prepare themselves for class.
3) Do your homework.
4) If you are having difficulty with this subject, GO TO THE TEACHER FIRST and set an appointment. Ask (and I quote), "What CONSTRUCTIVE recommendations can you give me to improve my grades?"
5) OK, he is "mean." What attitude do you bring into class? (apathetic, interested, can't wait to leave, etc.) A change in your attitude could bring about a change in how he acts towards you. Try coming in with an interest towards the subject as it maybe a building block for future classes.
6) It is not "he has to earn my respect" world. Give respect to him and you will receive it in kind.
I wish you a good school year!

You will survive this school year with no problems. Treat him with respect and good manners like you would to other teachers. Mean teachers don't mean that they are necessarily bad teachers. They are harsher and more critical, but it is up to you to make it another one of the best and memorable school year.
If you can go through this year with job and grace, you are the winner. It means that you have succeeded in controlling your temper and attitude and present yourself fairly and appropriately in front of "mean people."

don't listen to what other people say about that teacher. Speak up if that's what they like, but be serious. Good luck!

Make it a challenge to yourself to suck up to the old bastard and give him everything he wants. Kill him with kindness. See if you can weasle a good mark out of him just by sucking up. Treat it like a game; never let him know you're faking it!
