Higher Education (University +) - June 2007

[Selected]: All categories Education & Reference Higher Education (University +)

We have attended several events organized by universities where they recruit high schoolers. Why do the speakers trip over themselves to demonstrate their institutions are the most diverse?

I expected they'd highlight their strengths in job placement, salaries of recent graduates, their links with industry, summer internships, academic quality, availability of scholarships, and such. While these were mentioned (sometimes not all), it was almost as an afterthought; the emphasis in words and pictures seemed unnaturally weighted towards the D word.

Given the global market, it's great for a kid to go to Europe or Asia on a 3 month internship and I'd love to see these schools arrange more of them; but shouldn't the school try to improve the quality of a physics class by bringing in more kids who are good at calculus than focus on how many states and religions they represent?

Why is "40% of our students are minority" more important than "40% of our kids get jobs of $60K+"?

Okay, so what are my chances of getting in the U of Michigan. I only have a 3.846 G.P.A, but do you think they wil look at my classes and that they will make up for my lack in G.P.A. I'm taking A.P Bio, A.P Chemistry, A.P English Composistion, A.P Spanish, Calculus, and regular history 12. And I have already taken A.P. Literature and another A.P science. Plus I have my Sat scores in: math: 760 critical reading:750 writing:750. And I'm also very active in sports and in 7 clubs. Do you think that with these U of M will overlook my low G.P.A and accept me?

Why wouldn't a white person qualify for a scholarship if he attends an all black college (I think they're called "historically black colleges")? Aren't a handful of white people attending an all black college considered minorities in that college? If you answer this question, you need to know the true definition of minority.

No, I'm not a racist. This is a legitimate question. I think I should post this question in the education category but I'll post it some where else as well.

I'm 25, and I own my own business. I make more than most of the people who were in college with me when I dropped out.
The first year of college, I realized college prepared you to become an employee. Because of peer pressure, I didn't quit college until my junior year, but I should've it done it sooner.
2 years after, eveyrone graduated, and I was still working 3 jobs trying to get money to start off my business, and people looked down on me.
Today after 3 years of having started my business, I'm doing great.
Sometimes it's hard to relate with my old college friends. They complain about their boss, but I don't have a boss to complain about. They talk about making merits to maybe get a promotion, I just work harder to get a better profit. They seek their boss' approval, my employees want to get my approval. They get happy they finally got an office, I set an office for myself long ago.

I have a 3.6-3.7GPA unweighted, I've taken a lot of honors classes, and I've been an exchange student and done a few, though not an impressive amount, of activities and some volunteer work. Does anyone have any tips on filling out applications/ essays to stand out, in a good way, or studying for the SATs efficiently?

Thanks!
