It's only tacky if you type really loud. People who do that are annoying.
Oh, and it's also annoying if you bring in your laptop for notes but then you use it to play games. It's very distracting to others :)
Otherwise, as long as your teacher permits it, go ahead! It can make things much neater.

Nope, it's not tacky at all!

But if you're thinking about using one you should first consider what classes you're going to be taking and how useful a laptop will be!

For instance, I would have found a laptop useful for classes such as history, sociology, or philosophy because (for me) these classes had notes that were all written words. However, I would not have found a laptop useful for ANY of my science classes because I was often needing to draw diagrams and pictures within my notes and I'm sure I wouldn't have been able to do this on a laptop at a quick enough speed to keep up with the class ... and having separate written notes and diagrams can get confusing sometimes.

Nope. In fact, it is a good idea. But I would suggest that you need to be good at typing before you try to do this. If you can write by hand faster than you can type, then probably your best bet would be writing out your notes by hand. Also, I would suggest that you print out your notes soon after you leave class because your hard-drive could crash or your disk could break. Then you could lose all your notes for the day (or for a longer period of time), which wouldn't be a good scenario.

I will mention that using a lap-top isn't a good idea in a science or math class. There are too many diagrams that need to be drawn, so you wouldn't be able to keep up. Also, if you are in a class where the professor gives power-point presentations and posts them on the web (before the presentation), it might be better to just print out the slides (6/page) and then make notes in the margins, rather than just using a laptop.

No it isn't. What is wrong about taking notes on a laptop in class. Unless it is not allowed, I mean. But otherwise, it actually is a pretty efficient and modern way.

Hope this helps!

Not at all. In this day and age where laptops are SO pervasive, I'd expect it.

Not if you are in Law School. That's the only way you'll do it there.
