I had a similar problem. The answer is not to study MORE, or HARD, but SMARTER!

Look at your work that is already graded (that you say is average) and identify exactly WHERE you are doing bad. I guarantee you that everything you are doing isn't average.

Once you figure out where in your work you are doing the worst, and where you are doing the best, spend less time on your strong area and move that time over to your weak area.

Important: Keep enough time in your strong area to keep it strong. So you will have to play with the time requirements a little, but once you find just how much time you need to keep your strong areas with good grades, spend the rest of the time working on your weak areas that get you the lower grades.

Weak areas = questions you miss, things you forget, points you lost on the exam

Strong areas = questions you always get right, things you remember instantly without looking them up, points you always score well on during an exam.

If your studying method is ineffective, studying more won't help. I don't know what you are doing now, but if your school has something like a learning center, you might want to talk to someone about your studying techniques. What you are saying is pretty common. I always feel terrible when I have to give a less-than-stellar grade to someone I KNOW has been studying hard, while someone else who put very little time into it did much better, but grades are based on the outcome, not the effort. You need to share with someone how you have been studying and let them help you do it better. The payoff may be not only higher grades, but more free time.

Yeah i feel your problems at times as well although i still get higher than the average considerably. Maybe the problem with you is that you study directly out of books and notes and don't do enough practice questions. If you do practice questions-like heaps it should help. I personally study my notes. I know what you mean when you say you feel guilty. Anyhow maybe you need a more effective way of study evidently the one you are following is not giving you the desired results.
