i can't remember the word, but i can sorta remember the definition: liking or enjoying other people's pain (i remember it from 12 Angry Men) can anyone help me find the right word?

btw, i already tried searching the reverse dictionaries, and i still haven't found the right word

I work with a lot of teenagers and it always bothers me when I hear about sophomores and juniors taking high school exit exams. In my opinion, I think exit exams should be difficult enough and cover enough of the high school curriculum that the test is still difficult for the average senior. Basically, I think passing an exit exam should indicate a general understanding of all topics including senior year subjects like economics and government.

Furthermore, I think passing the exit exam as a senior should be a prerequisite to receiving a diploma. Those who don't pass the exam can either try again or they receive a certificate of completion rather than a diploma.

I saw a woman (who I did not know) and she said to me and my friend "have a happy holiday girls" and then held up three fingers (like a W) and had her arm held sideways across her body with her elbow kind of sticking out. Does anyone have any idea what this could mean???

Sorry for the long question but I need some help here. You see up till now I have been home schooled all my life, I did well educationally. I'm 17 and just finishing my junior year in high school if I was actually in high school that is.
Just this year (my junior year) I got into a program which is technically public school but it's a program that you can do at home. This program if you do well enough in grades gives you the option to go to college early. They give you funds to go to college and take classes so you can finish your senior year in college and get the credits to graduate from high school but at the same time start my college classes toward my associates degree. So it’s sort of like a head start for me. Only problem is I’m not sure about my social stand point because the youngest you can be to get into this college is 17, so I’ll be at the bottom of the food chain (so to speak). Continued:

I have a fairly firm grasp of language usage, but someone I work with says that #2 is correct, and I think it's #1. I know that headquarters (like scissors) is a word that sounds like a plural when it's actually singular, but there have to be exceptions when it sounds as awkward as #2 does, right?
