Although the education level that you can provide to your kid at home may be better than our abysmal public school system, aren't you harming your kid's social development by keeping him or her away from other kids? It's important for kids to learn how to interact with other people, especially those their own age. Depression could also be a problem if you are being forced to learn with only your tutor/family around you. When kids hit college, I have a feeling that they will be socially inept and awkward, which could be harmful and uncomfortable for them.

My son is 12. Currently going to public school in 5th grade. He is a little emotionaly/socially delayed and I am planning on home schooling him next year.I do not fully believe that everything they need to know is what the schools teach. I want to raise him to be self sufficient, creative, succesful and to be able to run his own business + skills he can use to fall back on for income if he needs to.

The things I have down so far as important are:

Letter writing - business and personal with proper punctuation etc.
Typing - 40 wpm by the time he "graduates"
Computer skills: word, excel, photoshop, frontpage - the key and high use programs.
Spelling
Extended vocabulary words
Writing: articles and short stories
Accounting & money mgmt.
Time mgmt skills
Bookkeeping(?)
How to sell
How to market and advertise (My area)
I also want him to either learn from me or trade school: business Mgmt.
+ all the life stuff like cooking, shopping, cleaning etc
What else? Can you help add to the list?

Do you have a special school room or just use the kitchen table? Do you have separate school supplies, or does the whole family share scissors, pencils, markers, etc.?
Are the school supplies (books, math manipulatives, art supplies, etc.) mixed in the same room as the toys?

Please help!

Hello.
I'm Mairy, and the question just about covers it.

I REALLY want to be homeschooled REALLY badly.
I know like 3 or 4 people that are homeschooled and they all said that they like it (minus the social skills- but I really could care less)

I'm a freshman in High School on my 1st semester(second semester starts late January, early February) and I would like this to apply either by next semester or MAYBE my second year in High School.

I asked my parents already and they said that they couldn't stay home. I offered tutoring, but they said it was pretty expensive and we honestly don't have the money =/

So I was wondering if MAYBE the state could fund me or something? I'm not sure...

In school I am honestly failing everything and I have just about lost my science credit which means I have to redo it sometime next year since it's a full year course.... math is horrible too.

Please help!
Any proposals on how to persuade them would be nice!,
Mairy

From those experienced homeschoolers, what is something you've learned about the lifestyle that you would like pass on to others?

I noticed this response from a poster

"Did you ever think about the fact that you'll never know more than your dad (or parents) if you do this? Really, you'll never get to learn anything more than they can teach you. At least at school you have several teachers, different perspectives, and lots of opportunities to make friends."

And I was rather dumbfounded by it. Would any of you brilliant homeschoolers write a response to this?

All I can say is how many times a day I am amazed at the things my children know that I never taught them!

I'm in 11th grade and I'm homeschooled as of this year and I don't know what I want to do with my life. I don't know what I want to become. I really like art, like photography and graphic design. But there is so much talent out there and I most likely will not make it in either of those fields. I want to be successful but I don't know what there is for me to do. Are there any careers in the artistic fields that are not as competitive as graphic design or photography but are still great jobs?

One person responded to a question with something about being "attacked" for her own question.

Yet, this very person called homeschooling "ridiculous"--isn't THAT an attack?

Another person posted in the parenting section a week or so ago about "why are homeschoolers so defensive?" Well, when people spout INCORRECT things like, "They don't get social contact," and "You're doing a disservice to your kids" and omg, some of the horrible things that have said in the past that definitely constitute an attack, of course people are going to defend themselves.

Perhaps the better question is: do homeschoolers attack naysayers any more than they attack homeschoolers?

How are parents, who themselves are not highly educated, possibly educate their children better than teachers? Don't kids suffer disadvantages from failing to be exposed to multiple viewpoints, classroom competition, social interaction, and independence?

As a public school teacher, I find homeschooling to be ridiculous and have a largely negative impact on a child's life. I want some pro-homeschoolers to show me how you, many of which have no degree, are suited to teach children and bring them up to be successful. Show me how you can create real social experiences (which are vital) in a homeschool setting. Show me how homeschooling prepares you for the real world. Show me how the absence of things such as a science laboratory can not affect the way that your child learns. If you can truthfully show me that homeschooling is legit, there's a good chance that I will change my mind. I've known many families who have homeschooled and they all have very socially awkward kids who may have 'graduated' at 16, but would have failed out of a classroom setting. Their kids go to school in their pajamas and have month-long breaks whenever they want to. It truly seems silly and inconsistent, among many other things. I'm just running out of characters

OR
Do you take scheduled breaks throughout the year?
We do, mostly so my daughter can take advantage of her friends being out of school. We've spent the morning doing Yoga, writing important things on our new calendars and goofing of online with a friend. I think we'll take the dogs to the park later.
