The reason why is because you say "discouraged by this ......" not "discouraged......by this."
So, it should read "Discouraged by this, Loraine walked four blocks to a coffee shop."
Also, though, number two should be "However, Dee was not home."

you have been given advice that #2 is wrong but it is actually correct. If it was worded "Dee however was not home", then there would be commas after Dee and after however.
best way to figure out commas in most circumstances is to read the sentence and notice where there are natural pauses when you say it aloud. Nine times out of ten, where there is a pause, there is a comma.

3 needs a comma. A couple of the other sentences could use a comma. Don't be discourage, I graduated college and my grammar still sucks.
