I work with a lot of teenagers and it always bothers me when I hear about sophomores and juniors taking high school exit exams. In my opinion, I think exit exams should be difficult enough and cover enough of the high school curriculum that the test is still difficult for the average senior. Basically, I think passing an exit exam should indicate a general understanding of all topics including senior year subjects like economics and government.

Furthermore, I think passing the exit exam as a senior should be a prerequisite to receiving a diploma. Those who don't pass the exam can either try again or they receive a certificate of completion rather than a diploma.

I have mixed feelings on the exit exams. My daughter was a very good student, but had difficulties in math. She failed the math portion of her exit exam every time she took it the first 2 years and was so frustrated by her senior year I was afraid she was going to quit school as soon as she turned 18. She finally passed the exam just in time for graduation.

My son passed the exit exam his sophomore year and we couldn't keep him in school ( drop him off at the front door, he walked out the back door), so it did more harm than good for him to pass it. He thought he knew EVERYTHING because of that exam. Fortunately he turned out okay, but it really left me with bad feelings about all the testing, rather than teaching that is done in public schools.

I agree that they should be more difficult, or at least cover more advanced material. I also agree that students must pass the exam before they are allowed to graduate. However, I think it's worse that there are so many students who either fail to pass or have to take the exam multiple times before passing. I know high school seniors who are worried about not graduating because they haven't yet passed all of the parts of the exit exam. That's ridiculous when it is testing sophomore level material and a passing score on some parts are in the 40s.

yeah i agree they should be a bit harder cuz i passed it my sophomore year and it was really easy but some schools have students that HAVE to take gov't and economics their senior year. Seniors shouldn't have to take the exit exam because then they only get one shot at passing the exam. If they take it their sophomore year and dont pass it they have about 5 or 6 more chances at passing it. Otherwise students are going to have to be in school a lot longer and seniors already have to take the SAT's
