KIMBERLY

- from Lord Kimberley, whose surname is the name of his family estate. It means "land ["leah" (now "lea" - meadow)] belonging to CYNEBURGA" in Old English

"Cyneburga" is from Old English for "royal fortress" - "cyne" (now = "king") + "burg" ("fortress" - same as it still in German)

Thus "Lord Kimberly" is the title for the person who owns the land/meadow (estate) on which there is a royal fortress, and "Kimberly" would literally be "meadow of the royal fortress".

MICHELLE

- the French feminine form of the biblical Hebrew name "Michael" (more strictly "Mik'al") which means"Who is like God?" that is:
* mi = "who"
* k(a)- (sometimes written ch- in English) = "like"
* El = "God" (the fuller form is "Elohim"; you'll find this in MANY Hebrew names, from Elijah and Elisha to Ariel, Samuel, Ezekiel and Daniel)

ADVICE on researching names:

Baby name books and sites are NOTORIOUSLY sloppy, a mixture of good material and junk... and unfortunately, it's often hard to tell which is which unless you happen to know the languages involved. These two names are well enough established that you're likely to get the right info; but other names are not so well done. Also, 'baby name' sources rarely break the name down into its parts so you can see HOW it means what they say.

But there ARE some excellent resources, that are much more carefully researched, and explain more to you. The two best online ones I know for first names are:
* www.behindthenames.com (cited above)
* www.aboutnames.ch

Edgar's name book is also quite good -- look on this page for its entry on the place name "Kimberly" (it will tell you about the family from which the name came).

If you want a BOOK, I recommend *A Dictionary of First Names* edited by Patrick Hanks and Flavia Hodges (found in many public libraries)

Kimberly means: chief or ruler
Michelle means: Who is like God? (I know it's strange but that's what it means!)
