I've been noticing more and more tip jars showing up in the most ridiculous places. Subway, donut shops, pretzel stores, coffee shops. These people aren't going above the call of duty. They're following standard protocols and recipes.

Now don't get me wrong. I've been working retail my whole life and I know that it's a hard job, but these employees are being paid regular hourly wages. They are not waiters who only make $2 an hour. They're not in an industry forced to live off tips. I shouldn't be expected to tip someone to pour a cup of coffee or make a sandwich that they are being paid to make.

I've read the Q&A about tipping. I would like to add to it by asking the question "why tip at all?" I'd be satisfied if the restuarants just paid the staff a living wage and raised the prices of food across the board. Have we just assumed that restuarants cannot operate this way?

I enjoy eating out frequently and I do tip but I'd be happier if the custom were abolished. I think it creates a perverse incentive in many cases. Wait staff assume they are entitled to a tip under most circumstances? Is that justified? Some of my friends have held these jobs and they told me how they go about their business of serving customers and the prejudices they use to determine the level of service they provide in an individual case. For example, Europeans don't tip, blacks don't tip, rich don't tip, ugly people don't tip. These people have to prove themselves to the wait staff just to get decent service because it is automatically assumed that they will not tip. This is backwards.

I just want maybe some jello and whipped cream or a slice of cake and one scoop of ice cream. What ever happened to the simple desserts?

Why is it that when people come into a restaurant, they insist on telling the host or manager where it is that they want to sit. Maybe the booth is more comfortable, but the host has been trained to place customers where they will get the best service based on the server's ability to perform their job. Why does the customer feel as though they have a right to tell the host how to do his/her job? Let me know, folks.

Wendys or MacDonalds?

Thanks to Yahoo posting some tipping questions on their home page, I feel more educated about tipping in restaurants. But a lot of people made the point that servers deserve big tips because they only make $2-3 per hour. What about states like Washington where even the waitresses make the state minimum wage of $7.93 per hour?

P.S. I'm not trying to be cheap. I'm just pointing out that if that is the argument for tipping a large percentage that so many people made rather than an actual service-based tip then it should be less in states where servers are paid more.

if i go somewhere and i order something and it was made correctly and i dont like it, i dont eat it, but i dont expect to get my money back, thats why you read the menu and ask questions before you order soemthing, and if you are in a fancier place, and you don't know what stuff is, then go eat someplace cheaper, i dont know how many times ive brought out the right thing to a table and people didn't know what they were ordering so they specifically ask for it to be free, why should others have to pay for your ignorance?

How much should I tip if I get great service, good service, adequate service or bad service?

If I get great service I would tip anywhere above 25%, if I get good service I would tip 20-25%, if I get adequate service I would tip 10-20%, if I get bad service I would tip anywhere less than 10%, if I get extremely poor service I would tip them a quarter and report them to the manager.

lately, when i eat at a subway, i notice they hardly put any meat on the subs. One subway put 2 scoops of tuna fish per 6 inch sub and another 3 scoops, either way it was lacking a lot of tuna. And their spicy italian barely had any meat on it. Im thinking pound for pound, subway is the worst deal out of all the fast food places. Whatever happened to the more meat less fat that they promised?

Also they are the hardest to get coupons for.
