I got a scientific atlanta cable DVR box, I am trying to copy from that to my DVD Recorder, any idea how do to it? I hooked up the wires in front with the white, red, and yellow, and did the same to the DVR. Why is it not recording?

I hooked up my dvd recorder to my television with the red, white and yellow cable. I can watch movies and I even formated a dvd-rw. When I try to auto program the channels into the thing, all I get is static. I cannot view tv channels at all as long as the thing is turned on. I am assuming that I will not be able to record any shows because of this. What am I doing wrong??

I have Virgin Media (also once known as Telewest!!) but I have a freeview box too in my daughter's bedroom, which will not connect to the aerial. I have tried connecting to the main aerial but since found that cable don't transmit freeview digi transmissions (or something!)
I have heard I need a master aerial, I cannot get a reception without my cable tv..so I have a VERY poor reception area. I live in Edinburgh, already checked my postcode and it should be able to recieve freeview. I have heard of some digital indoor aerials..anyone have any ideas of which one to get?
Thanks in advance!
