Hi J.C.,
A TIVO will work with any PC. It outputs a video signal that any TV will recognize.
TIVO records the shows on a hard drive so there are no tapes or DVDs necessary.
The TIVO downloads a TV guide either over the phone or Internet every day. It keeps a couple weeks in memory but updates every day. You can record by just looking at the guide and clicking the program you want.
TIVO records a few minutes of a live program and erases it all the time. This allows you to pause a live program and restart it or even rewind a live program a few minutes and replay it.
I could go on and on about it. Go to TIVO central for more info - https://www3.tivo.com/tivo-tco/index.do
There is also a TIVO users group you might check out here - http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/index.php?s=4991dda17837c7fefd21443d75d5b968
We love our TIVO(s)

TIVo is a sort of hard drive recorder that you attach to your TV. How does it work, well, actually it is recording TV all the time, but will only be active, that is record on the TIVo for you to watch whatever you have progammed. The reason why you can actually stop and start TV shows that you are watching live is due to the fact that the TIVo is recording all the time. But, that's probably more than you wanted to know. It is extremely easy to use a TIVo. you just plug it into basically any TV, you have to follow the instructions to get the correct TV hooked up, that's really important, as the TIVo has to read from the TIVo. The TIVo will have really clear instructions come up on the screen to tell you what to do next. Make sure that you have a phone plug near by to hook in the TIVo, or that you have purchased the etherlink adaptor if you have a wireless network in your home, then just let your TIVo pick up all the info it needs from over the phone lines. You do have to pay a monthly fee for use of TIVo, or you can pay for a year in advance and get a better deal. It should work with most TV's, but I would say they shouldn't be too old. They don't have to be new flat screens or anything like that.
