I have Virgin Media (also once known as Telewest!!) but I have a freeview box too in my daughter's bedroom, which will not connect to the aerial. I have tried connecting to the main aerial but since found that cable don't transmit freeview digi transmissions (or something!)
I have heard I need a master aerial, I cannot get a reception without my cable tv..so I have a VERY poor reception area. I live in Edinburgh, already checked my postcode and it should be able to recieve freeview. I have heard of some digital indoor aerials..anyone have any ideas of which one to get?
Thanks in advance!

You can pick up an aerial just about anywhere. They start at around £4, and go to £4000. Try any "high gain" aerial you see in any shop (Tesco, Argos, Woolworths, etc), which can sit on top of the television. If you get it from a shop with a good return policy, you can always try it and return if you find you can't get a signal no matter how hard you try.

You need to find out which direction to point it, but you can just look around at your neighbours' houses for that (whichever way their outdoor aerials point, try that first). With old style analogue signals (the main 5 stations), the signal gets slowly better and worse as you're further away and as you tilt the aerial toward and away the right direction. With freeview, it's a digital signal, meaning all-or-nothing. You have to have to play around with it to be sure if you can receive freeview with an internal aerial or not.

You definitely need an outside aerial to receive Freeview in Edinburgh. The problem with digital TV is that reception does not deteriorate gradually as the signal weakens (the way analogue TV does), but it suddenly disappears at a certain signal threshold. This is known as the edge of the cliff effect.

Presumably you will receive your signal from the Black Hill transmitter. To receive ALL Freeview channels you will neeed a WIDE BAND Group E aerial. The following website gives a lot of useful information:

(this page is about coverage from Black Hill).

Assuming that you have an aerial for your main TV, go in the loft (Attic) and splice the cable, taking the extra lead to a point for the bedroom, then you'll have a suitable aerial socket.
