Consumer Electronics - 14 October 2007

I want to replace my old crappy VCR with a digital video recorder, one where I can record to a hard drive, and then watch from that hard drive. I *do not* want to pay subscription fees (ie, TiVo, et al.). I don't even need a DVD recorder- I just want to "tape" certain shows and be able to watch them. If it has to have a DVD recorder bundled in, I don't mind- I just wouldn't use it.

I've been looking around, but all the documentation is a little sketchy- I can't determine if some of these devices (like the Philips DVDR3575H/37) actually *need* you to use DVDs, or if you can simply use the built-in HDD to record and watch shows.

Someone a little more knowledgeable please help!

My mom mentioned that she wants a DVD-R to record some movies off TV (and if possible from DVDs she rents). I'd like to get her one for Christmas but I have no idea what to look for. There's all these different formats, which is it that I'm looking for?

this guy that likes me at school keeps calling me on my cell, we are good friends but i do not like him like that. He calls my cell 4-5 times a day, sometimes more.

I have an RCA television. The flyback went out a couple of years ago. I finally had it replaced, but then about 3 days after the warranty was up, the tv started doing the same thing. I checked, and found out that this particular model flyback is notorious for blowing shortly after being replaced. I will not pay another $125 to have it fixed again, but I can purchase a new flyback for about $21. I would like to try and fix it myself. Does anyone know how to do it or know of a place where I can find out? I've tried searching for a site, but can't find anything that I can use.

I recently purchased what was advertised as a SONY 8mm Head Cleaner V825CLD (a discontinued model). Even though it is labeled as the video head cleaner, I am not convinced that it actually cleans, and I can record and playback video on it. Since the cassette was not in shrink wrap (in theory, it could be sold from a bulk box), and I can record/play back (plus it has the record lock/unlock slider), I strongly suspect I have been sold a fake. Given what I've said, can I be 100% confident that it is a fake? If so, why?

Im planning on getting either an xbox 360 or a PS3 sometime after Thanksgiving mostly due to COD4 because my compy wont be able to handle it. My question is which console would you recomend? It would only cost $500 to get PS3 with blu ray or $580 to get Xbox 360 w/HD-DVD, this is were i cant decide. I like the movies coming out on HD-DVD better than those coming out on Blu ray. I guess i dont know which to get because i dont just want to play games, i would also like to watch movies in HD. I had thought of getting PS3 and Toshiba A-2.

I have a TV with an antenna, and if it were to sit exactly where a different TV works great, with the antenna pointed exactly the same direction, channels 2-11(?) don't work at all? After 11, all of the other channels come in the same (if not better). What is wrong with this tv? Is it fixable?, I think I looked through all the settings. uh, is vhf or uhf or something broken on the inside? will video games work?
