I want to replace my old crappy VCR with a digital video recorder, one where I can record to a hard drive, and then watch from that hard drive. I *do not* want to pay subscription fees (ie, TiVo, et al.). I don't even need a DVD recorder- I just want to "tape" certain shows and be able to watch them. If it has to have a DVD recorder bundled in, I don't mind- I just wouldn't use it.

I've been looking around, but all the documentation is a little sketchy- I can't determine if some of these devices (like the Philips DVDR3575H/37) actually *need* you to use DVDs, or if you can simply use the built-in HDD to record and watch shows.

Someone a little more knowledgeable please help!

You can ignore the DVD part of a Philips DVDR3575H/37 if you want to.

This unit programs like a VCR. When you program a recording, there is a setting for "DVD" or "HDD", if you tell it to record to DVD and forget to put a blank DVD in the recorder, it will automatically record the program to the hard drive anyway.

Page 44 of the manual (linked below) describes this.

Walmart also has a cheaper Polaroid unit but the user comments on the Walmart web site & AVS forums are not very good.

A TIVO has a much nicer user interface. But if you don't want a monthly fee and VCR style programing is good enough, this unit looks good.
