I have an RCA television. The flyback went out a couple of years ago. I finally had it replaced, but then about 3 days after the warranty was up, the tv started doing the same thing. I checked, and found out that this particular model flyback is notorious for blowing shortly after being replaced. I will not pay another $125 to have it fixed again, but I can purchase a new flyback for about $21. I would like to try and fix it myself. Does anyone know how to do it or know of a place where I can find out? I've tried searching for a site, but can't find anything that I can use.

Thanks!

Thanks for the info. I don't really need another tv. This one was given to me after my son figured it would cost too much to have it fixed. Once I had it fixed, I figured that it would be good for more than a few months! It will be donated. Let someone else pay to have it fixed again!

If you don't know how to you shouldn't attempt. There are potentially fatal voltage and current present in a TV, some are 50,000 V! I recommend not fixing it and getting a new model, make sure not to get the same brand.

p.s. RCA TVs are not made in the US anymore.

I doubt very much you'd get a very good replacement flyback for $21. Some of those aftermarkets didn't work very well especially the larger screen RCAs, as they tended to compress in from the sides.
But if you did try, there is a lot of unsoldering to do on the main printed circuit board, the CRT circuit board for your screen & then you'd have to unhook the anode cap from the picture tube. That's the one that you'd need to be careful of as you can get a good jolt from- nothing that's gonna knock you into the next world though.
By the way, a picture tube will only implode it won't EXPLODE so you need not up your life insurance just yet!!
There's really not a whole lot to replacing one if your handy around electronics as long as you unplug the unit & discharge the tube properly.
However, if you say they had a problem with that model anyway--why bother?

Rca Flyback Transformer

Dont.

The flyback transformer is a high-voltage unit that hooks onto the back of your TV tube and controls the electron beam that paints the picture. The reason you cannot find information on how to do it yourself is that you need to be a trained technician to do this type of work or fire/death could result. (I kid you not).

The CRT tube in your television (where the flyback transformer attaches) is also a dangerous thing to mess with. A slight strain/crack and the thing explodes like 100 tube light bulbs.

I'm sorry, but this is not something you should attempt. Hit your local CraigsList and find a better TV for $200-$400.
