Software - October 2007

I am thinking of purchaisng a new computer. I noticed the majority, whether HP, Dell or Gateway, include Windows Vista for home. I don't know much but wonder what issues I should worry about. How big of memory and speed should I have for now and in the future? Any educated or experiental help would be greatly appreciated.

Also what are the advantages & disadvantages of a desk top verses a laptop, including one with a docking station.

I don't have a Microsoft Office CD anymore it broke. Can I backup Microsoft Office to my flash drive using the Windows Backup Utility? Will that work? If so, what do I need to do step by step? If not, how else can I back it up to my flash drive?

when i test my movie, it plays but when i publish it, it wont anymore. im not using any actionscripts and i only have one scene. its giving me a head ache and i just want to finish it already!! PLEASE help me ASAP! i never had this problem before...

SEND ERROR REPORT ? even if, I decide against this it still shuts down all my links and starts from the start screen. There never is an error to begin with and this is constantly popping up. How do I stop or fix this from happening ?

movie file is of about 5 ~ 6 mb, and 10 minutes of duration. it shows in properties about 5 frames /seconds.
when i play that with windows media players, that tries to download codecs..but couldnt.
how can i know..what codec can play that

This is for an online club to have meetings once a month. It would be great to have audio with possible video. Chat forums are good, but do not offer audio/video. I looked into skype, but at most, 9 people can talk. What do you think?

I have a windows vista home edition in my PC. one day i partitioned my 160GB hard disk and did some disk formatting (The problem is that i don't remember which partition was it that i formatted). Then i installed windows XP in the newly created partition. when i navigate to the "documents and settings" folder of my vista OS from the XP OS I can see that all my documents i saved when using vista are still present.

But actually the problem itself is that when I turn on my PC I am no more given to choose which of my 2 OS i want to load and the PC directly loads the windows XP.

Please tell me how to solve that problem.
How do I acces the Windows Vista.

I just installed Outlook 2007 and am using it as my email client. But whenever I delete a message or move it to a folder, Outlook just puts a line through it and makes the text gray (and it shows in the Inbox and the folder I filed it in). How do I get Outlook to actually remove the email from the Inbox entirely?

What new features in Microsoft Office 2007 will you use compared to past versions? Are there really any required features for typical office use?

Do most users see consider the only reason to upgrade as a compatibility issue between versions due to file formats? Will you use the non-proprietary/non-Microsoft Open Document Format (ODF) or will you use the Microsoft Open Office XML (surprisingly named very similar to the OpenOffice.org product)? Whether you support Microsoft Office or not, it seems that an open standard file format would benefit everyone in the long run (consider older formats, not just documents, that can no longer be used because software vendors cease to exist or don't support an older version or have converts to new formats).

I know a lot about computers and many different programming languages, but this is a feature I would think these programs should have and yet I cannot find a way to lock them.

I use Mozilla Firefox primarily. What I want to know is whether or not there is a way to lock the window so I don't accidently exit it. I have a tendancy of doing that. While I'm working I having many windows open and I'd like to have one that's connected to the internet that I cannot close by clicking the X.

Any advice here is appreciated.

I need to reinstall Microsoft Office on my laptop. I had it until I took my laptop to the shop due to a virus. I have the XP professional disk. Is Office, or something similar, on the XP Professional disk? If yes, how do I use the disk to load it? Thanks a bunch all!

Ok, I teach this girl guitar. I want something that i can put in her grades. I also want to be able to put in the percentages and then the program will automatically average all of them. I really don't want to use Microsoft because I don't have that kind of money. You know how the schools have a powerschool, if there is a site that I can use that I can put that there without distorting the whole grade sheet. My school has this program on the internet called "powerschool" and they put the grades on there. How can I do that, please stay away from Microsoft stuff, unless you can find something on the internet that I can get it for free. Please, if you don't have anything, don't say "sorry, there is no way to do that". Just tell me if there is a way to do it. I am also going to be teaching her typing and grammar and maybe spelling, is there a way that I don't have to have all of these icons on my desktop, is there going to be a way where I can just switch within this program??????

What in the world is Java Web start.../.java... and what do I need them for... If I delete them what will I be facing on my machine?
