Both have there own advanrtages and disadvantages, now if we compare the .net product of microsoft and j2ee of sun, .net is language independent but on the other hand j2ee is not, and j2ee is platform independent but .net is not.
so its up to the users which product they want to use...

what an awkward question!
Sun has a completly different set products, which include mainly development resources, most of which are free.
Microsoft produces mainly application sw's most of which are priced.
Sun wants to help the world by reducing the overall cost of software, and by providing platform independency - internet security, as well as by providing new/innovative technologies to the developers.
Microsoft wants to monopolise the market by every means.
Sun is doing the opposite of this.

and by the way, sun doesnt means linux, and microsoft doesnt mean XP.
.net is framework whereas j2se/j2ee/j2me are architectures. How can you compare them.

It depends on how comfortable you are with computers.

If you are quite confident, then you have the option - Sun or Microsoft.

ELSE, be happy with MICROSOFT. It is way ahead of the rest.

And practically every software under the Sun is compatible with the Microsoft platform.

Best for what ?

Microsoft makes home/business OS and are used daily by almost anyone and everyone.
Sun on the otherhand, are used in specialised applications and servers, unless you have a need for servers and workstation class computing, its beyond reach and use.

SUN is good for servers when you have valuable data,.
