A gif file and a pdf file use different software to open.

Find a gif file that you want to open, and rightclick on it. From the menu that appears select "Open With...". You will be able to select what program you want to open the gif file with. Normally you would want to choose a grpahic program such as Photo Editor or Imaging (both included with Windows for free). If nothing else, you cn open a gif file in Internet Explorer.

Try it, and once you find the program you want to use, you can make the selection permanenet. There is a check box at the bottom of the Open With that you select to make Windows always use that program to open gif files in the future.
