Software - November 2006

I'm liking the thinking behind Ubuntu so far, but it's basically the only one I've seen. I'm also leaning toward Xubuntu, because I hope to get some old junk machine to run it on, and Xubuntu is meant for lower-end machines. But what other distro's are out there? Is there some site where I can compare features of a bunch of them?

I cant get it to load. I ahve installed Grey Wolvs and when it gets past the video onto the loading screen it crashes once the bar fills up.

Lets say I already have a document, now i need to edit it every now and then, adding a line, or deleting a line, every time i do that the order of the following pages gets mixed up!
Recently, i have been told of the Tab option in the paragraph menu, I Set cursor before the first word on the following page and then Menu->Format->Paragraph select tab [Lines and page breaks] and switchOn there:
[Page break before]
But when I do this and go back to the page before(lets say page 1), and press enter, the entire page 2 gets down, becoming page 3, and i have a blank page on page 2...
how can i resolve this, and is there any way i can do it for the entire document(60 pages long) instead of putting the cursor on whenever i should in every page..

My computer keeps telling me it's all full, which I find hard to belive since I don't have much on it and it is a 60gig laptop... but that is for another question... anyway, thought I would delete some things and run the defragmenter to help it run smoother. When I highlight C drive in defragmenter and hit "defragment" it starts the "analyzing" process, then pops up with error message "The scan has been canceled because an error occurred in fil: C:\I386\ANGSAI.TT_" Anyone know how to resolve? Couldn't find this error message anywhere on web.... tried closing all unnecisary programs and processes, but no luck. Help! Thanks! :)

Ever since I installed, it's been all good and well. But in the last few days I started getting the "firefox.exe has performed an illegal operation..." error, and immediately closes. I have Kasperky, fully up to date, I scan on a regular basis, I have realtime protection, I disable suspicious applications using "Hijack This" regularly. What's happening with FireFox? I don't wanna go back to IE. Please help, folks. You think some extensions can create conflicts? That would be a disaster for FireFox if it were real, but I think it's unlikely.

What is the purpose of using more than one browser? I hear a lot about Firefox. I presently use IE6. I won't update to IE7 yet. However, I was also wondering about Firefox. If I installed that, will it mess with other programs I have? What are the advantages, distadvantages, etc?? Please help me understand the purpose of these browsers.

I have four partitions and the last ( 40 GB ) is the one where I installed Fedora Core 5. Now that I want to uninstall it (just uninstall, I don't want to install other Linux) what I must do? I know that it's not only to delete this whole partition but I must do some more...
I have Partition Magic if this help you.
Please, in the name of Linux , help me! I want these 40 GB back.
