What is the purpose of using more than one browser? I hear a lot about Firefox. I presently use IE6. I won't update to IE7 yet. However, I was also wondering about Firefox. If I installed that, will it mess with other programs I have? What are the advantages, distadvantages, etc?? Please help me understand the purpose of these browsers.

Installing firefox will not mess with your other programmes.. there are too many advantages of Firefox to be listed in here.. the foremost being that it has far less bugs that `IE' and comes with a built-in pop-up blocker and also has extensions (small pieces of code) which can perform virtually any task.. can you believe it.. I can use IRC (internet relay chat), FTP (File Transfer Protocol), Download Manager and many other things right from within Firefox.. not to mention the beauty of Tabbed Browsing and maintaining Bookmarks.. OMG I need hours to explain the benefits.. Just install & use it.. you'll *hug* me in delight

well, the idea is you find a browser that suits you.

I use firefox; I like the way the tabs work (although IE7 finally offers this to IE users), and I love the extensions (sort of plugin/addons you can install that add various functions to your browser).

My bud swears by internet explorer.

You might say that firefox has less of a record of bad internet security, but that could easily be because all the hackers target IE as it is 'top dog'; still the biggest userbase.

Again, if you have time try it out and see if you like it. If not, go back to IE or try Opera.

Firefox disables ActiveX which is the main reason why IE users are easily vulnerable to Spyware. Firefox will not mess up any programs, and you can use multiple browsers if you want. The main advantage I personally think is the Extensions Firefox offers which are basically adds on to customize your browser to your personal browsing needs.

Opera is also a pretty good alternative

Firefox won't interfere with any other progams in any way. I use FF exclusively and never use IE6.

The biggest reason to use FF is security. IE6 was written long before people were aware of how easy it would be to corrupt a computer by sneaking viruses and other malware in via the web browser. As a result Microsoft has been playing catch up ever since. And because, IE6 is deeply embedded in the OS itself, it is really hard to fix problem A without making problem B worse or creating a whole NEW problem C!

Firefox is a newer application written with less deep level OS integration, so it's easier to protect your computer from internet penetration with FF. This is not to say FF is immune from security violations, it is not. But penetration is frequently less severe with it and fixes seem to get released much quicker for FF than IE6.

IE7 is Microsoft's attempt to close those glaring vulnerabilities built into IE6, and to a large part they have succeeded. But MS still wants to have a deep level integration of the browser to the OS. That means it is still an incredibly complex piece of software that will be harder to fix , harder to test, and ultimately slower to get patches out to the users. so I am not optimistic for the long term security of IE7. I think MS needs to rethink how they go about implementing a browser in the first place.

IE is probably fine for people who only use their browsers for going to known safe sites like this one, online banking, etc, and who have adequate security suites that include anti-virus, anti-spyware, and a firewall; but for young people who are more open to trying new websites that may or may not be safe, I suggest using FF and making sure they keep it up to date (and still keep the AV,ASpy, and firewall), it's safer for them.

PLUS Firefox is free for download! And it is easy to uninstall. download it, and try it out. If you don't like it you can always get rid of it.

Try it to feel the difference !
You can also switch to view any
web page in IE with a simple addon in FireFox.
without opening IE again.
2. You can block POpups/ advts/ banners/pictures with
some more addons.
3. Update is automatic .
4. Takes less disk space compared to IE..
5. Number of addons or plug ins are available which you can
add as you like. Disable them when you don't want them.
ONLY disadvantage : you cannot update Xp with FireFox.
