Ever since I installed, it's been all good and well. But in the last few days I started getting the "firefox.exe has performed an illegal operation..." error, and immediately closes. I have Kasperky, fully up to date, I scan on a regular basis, I have realtime protection, I disable suspicious applications using "Hijack This" regularly. What's happening with FireFox? I don't wanna go back to IE. Please help, folks. You think some extensions can create conflicts? That would be a disaster for FireFox if it were real, but I think it's unlikely.

Appreciating the answers thus far. I'm already implementing some of the suggestions provided by you wonderful people. Answers: I don't think the problem is with Kasperky because I've been using Firefox for at least one month now, and the problem started only 2 days ago. The version I'm using is the previous one. I don't want to use the new one because some of my necessary and useful extensions are not compatable with it. I'm starting to think - thanks to the answer by Acid Zebra that it's the accumilating extensions I'm installing since this started after I installed a few recently, but I've only installed about 7 (total). I deleted some of them and kept a 3 or 4. I think this is likely the cause of the problem. But, let's see what happens.

Oh, and I really dislike the idea of switching to another browser, even though I am interested in trying out Opera and Safari (especially the latter), but not permanently. I tried FireFox and I was hooked. I never looked back. But since many useful extensions obviously cause problems (meaning you can't use all the ones you like), I might reconsider.

Having been around the block a few times on similarly complex problems, maintaining Windows and Linux boxes, there are two main things to consider.

1. Virus checkers modify the (undocumented) Windows kernel in ways that can interfere with many other programs which will operate normally if the virus checker is turned off. ALWAYS suspect the virus program, the firewall rules set, and other third-party "malware" systems when things get strange.

So the answers mentioning your favorite virus checker as the culprit may be right. All virus checkers change their basic behaviors regularly, in order to keep up with new threats. Just because you ran the checker for a while in parallel with Firefox and had no problems, doesn't mean it isn't causing the problem now.

2. The extensions available for Firefox are its "weak link" and everyone should add and use them with caution. Though most are first class and quite well behaved, some try - with varying degrees of success - to implement some undocumented features of Windows in order to provide functionality jealously guarded by Microsoft and which they reserve for their own applications - such as Internet Explorer. And, other extensions have old fashioned bugs that can cause varying degrees of havoc.

Having spouted off this way, don't take me as an authority. Your information is a little thin. You could have malware on your system, and that could be the culprit. Malware often is designed to "piggy-back" on top of system calls made by other programs, and Firefox (being open source) documents all its calls in its source code.

But by any stretch of the imagination, Firefox is order of magnitudes more secure than Internet Explorer. IE is a program useful ONLY because it is required by Windows Update and certain other locked-in-to-Microsoft sites.

So what should you do? Consider trying out another combination of malware products, or disabling the malware protection briefly to see if the crash message goes away. Remove Firefox and all extensions using Control Panel | Add/Remove Programs. Then re-install Firefox with a FRESH download (version 1.5.0.7 is proven and solid). Add your favorite extensions back no more than one every other day.

Good luck!

Firefox is the best!

Well, when it is not giving problems. Opera interface just naaah... and all the features and more are available as plugins. Now that I answered all the posts they already posted..

Try reinstalling firefox. HijackThis is a very powerful toy but if you block something tht you should not... you have a problem.

Delete the Firefox Registry entries. Google it, I do not have the time to describe step by step. DON"T ERASE ANYTHING you think is spyware from teh registry . Just firefox and then reinstall. f nothing works for you but you like firefox, get the portable version. www.portableapps.com - it will take longer to load, it is true but it will work ;).

If you installed 2.0 , at home I have that one installed and I think it is a little too sticky... for now.. it still needs some work I guess.

If Firefox is not the only program giving that error, consider reinstalling windows...and take it easy with the Hijackthis I know someone who disabled some system modules from Hijackthis(me, but don't tell anyone-shh) and I explorer would not work and gave same errors.

Hope that heps. I am a Firefox fan myself.

I think that Kapersky AV is the problem here as I have had problems with the AV running with Firefox. Personally I would uninstall the AV and re-install firefox version 2.0

well, it depends. The more extensions you load the more chance you have the browser will become unstable. And that would not be a disaster for ff; they don't code (most of) the extensions.

Disable a couple of them and see if the problems go away. If not, disable a couple more. If yes, there's your problem.

I see people who load like 40 extensions and then wonder why their browser is slow.

Did you update to the new version? A new version of firefox came out a few weeks out ago. If you have the old one, it might not be working right.

I had to stop running it. I really liked it initially, but then it started having connection problems that I was never able to figure out. I like the format and everything, but I think it's buggy.
