Hardware - December 2007

Our hp pavillion dv2125nr laptop, has begun to get very hot when my kids play games with a lot of graphics.

It does not cut off when getting hot. It has melted a plastic lapdesk and deformed a plastic table.

Could this be how the software or computer is configured? Does it sound like a mechanical problem (fan issue?)

This is an "entertainment PC" only a year old. When we bought it they (BestBuy) said it should be ok for these games.

We have sent it to Hp once-- came back with the same issue. They say to send it back-- but to back up data first, not responsible for data. I was just wanting to know more about what the problem might be before I send it back again.

I am also trying to find the data files from Zoo Tycoon 2 so that my kids won't lose their saved games. I can't find their profile info on the computer (we use XP).

I have a hp psc 1215 and even though it seems to be working fine, and no error messages have come up, nothing is printing. The paper goes through and makes all the usual noises, but there is no ink on the page. The ink isnt wasted because we got a new cartridge recently. How can I fix this?

I just installed another GiG of ram, but my computer isnt registering it.

mobo: p35-ds3r gigabyte

The other gig of ram installed is the same exact type, they came in as a 2 gig bundle.

OK, I'm now in a mood as i have dropped my laptop resulting in....

I have broke the screen as it wont stand up, the actual screen is fine and still works but it just wont stand up with out flopping down again!

Also i have ripped 2 buttons off, but they are non-repairable as i have snapped the little clips they go on to!

I know i can fix the buttons by taking it to a p.c shop! But does any of you know if my screen if beyond reparing? It seems to be that something has snapped causing it not to stand up....

Maaaaan why do i have to be so clumsy!

If so peeps, do u have an idea of the cost aswell?

So at the mo my eMachines 170 is 5 years old and is very, very slow. It takes 20 minutes to boot up when you first switch it on. I have done alot of defragmenting and disc clean ups, I have unchecked all unnessasary files in "msconfig" and . I have also removed all unessasary large files and stuck them on a 500gb ext hard drive. The PC is still slow so I need it to run faster and such before I can install my new DVD burner, also i was told the reason my windows movie maker files wont save is cause I dont have enough RAM. Will adding more memory greatly improve the speed of my PC? Also what specs do I need to determine what type of RAM I need?

I am trying to install Linux on a computer I cobbled together, but the CD-ROM refuses to boot. I have swapped CD-ROM drives, so the issue is not the drive itself. At present the drive is set to cable select and it's cable is in the motherboard's #1 IDE slot. The boot order is set to CD, A, C in the BIOS. Any suggestions?

We bought an older computer a couple of years ago for Christmas. We use it to play games on and stuff. It is now running Windows 95. We have a newrer computer we use for the business and internet. We bought XP for it. I want to use our XP and put it on the older pc. But for the life of me I can't find the reg number for it. I bought some PC133 ram for my computer that is a few years old off eBay, and I didn't check it, the guy sent me PC400 DDR ram. I just halfway clipped them in and wondered why they weren't fitting the whole way because I was in such a hurry to get the ram in. So I go to start it up and smell some burning and nothing happens, so I turned off the computer immediately and pulled out some smoking hot ram. Now the computer wont even boot with the old ram in. I'm guessing all I burnt out was the slots for the ram on the motherboard. Is it possible by doing this and using something with the wrong voltage can burn out anything but my motherboard like - (pci cards, hard drives, dvd drives, etc.)? Everything else still seems to work normally when I start, power light on tower and the monitor just dont come on. Was planning on getting new CPU, motherboard, computer case, ram, vid card - keeping everything else... Should this solve my problem?

I have been given a Packard Bell PC. My monitor (which works on other pcs) won't work with this one. When the pc first powers up the monitor works for 30 seconds and shows that windows is starting up but then the screen goes black. There is no sound card in the pc - could this be the reason my monitor won't work with it?

my seagate 80 gb hdd which has imp data got damaged. To be precise smoke came out from it.i suspect this was bcoz of wrongly connected power cable what are my chances of getting back data?? getting back HDD in working condition??

When shopping for a PC I usually see all these tips that include looking for a specific number of RAMS, a level of a processor and just thngs I don't really understand. Without shelling money out for a thick manual book I'll never read, could someone just ive me an over view of what's important?
