I have been given a Packard Bell PC. My monitor (which works on other pcs) won't work with this one. When the pc first powers up the monitor works for 30 seconds and shows that windows is starting up but then the screen goes black. There is no sound card in the pc - could this be the reason my monitor won't work with it?

It sounds like the resolution that Windows is running at is too high for your monitor to cope with.

Either:
Borrow a higher function monitor and use that to reduce the resolution and/or refresh rate down to a level your monitor can cope with.

Or
Boot up in safe mode. (Press F8 when prompted during Windows startup) This will reset the resolution to 640 by 480, or possibly 800 by 600. Then you can set the resolution to a higher value that is supported by your monitor.

You indicated that you switch monitors. Do you have a separate video card in that PC or is it a motherboard only video card. Look at it again and see if there is another video card to connect the monitor to. This sounds like a video card issue only. The screen goes black, because it does not see your video card.

Was the new machine working fine before with another monitor?

Only thing I can think of is that the version of windows is corrupt, or the display drivers are corrupt.

The fact that the screen works at the initial boot up makes me think this.

There is something wrong with the compatability, If I was a betting man;... and I am!. I would say that the power supply that you are using on the monitor for that computer the wattage is off try using another power supply for it.

Sound card has nothing to do with your monitor. Sounds like your video card is defective. Did it work before it was given to you?

have you checked the compatibility issues...

it could be the port on the computer itself... so i advise you test the pc with another monitor...

emmm al else i can think of is the power lead might be slightly loose or something daft like that...
