Our hp pavillion dv2125nr laptop, has begun to get very hot when my kids play games with a lot of graphics.

It does not cut off when getting hot. It has melted a plastic lapdesk and deformed a plastic table.

Could this be how the software or computer is configured? Does it sound like a mechanical problem (fan issue?)

This is an "entertainment PC" only a year old. When we bought it they (BestBuy) said it should be ok for these games.

We have sent it to Hp once-- came back with the same issue. They say to send it back-- but to back up data first, not responsible for data. I was just wanting to know more about what the problem might be before I send it back again.

I am also trying to find the data files from Zoo Tycoon 2 so that my kids won't lose their saved games. I can't find their profile info on the computer (we use XP).

Graphic processors do run hot because of the intensive use they get when gaming. You only have to look at a high end graphics card for a conventional PC to see that most of it is heatsink and fan.

Trying to run that much computation in a laptop is bound to cause problems as it isn't possible to vent the heat quickly enough.

You could put a metal tray on the table under the PC. My graphics processor runs at 61 deg C, which is hot enough to melt soft plastic.

Laptops aren't meant for games, and they really aren't that efficient at dissipating heat either so it sounds like it's a normal condition to me, nothing is wrong with it Get a cooling pad for it from newegg.com and you should be set. But seriously, did you buy a laptop to play games? That's what a desktop is for!!

it's most likely a hardware issue. Zoo tycoon shouldn't make a newer laptop like yours over heat. You should see if you can exchange it for a new one.

It sounds like your computer is not able to play strong high quality graphic. You will probably need to update your video cards and stuff.

if it happens only on certain games, sounds like a driver issue. make sure games are patched to latest updates and video and sound drivers are also up to date. if that doesnt help, could be hardware overheating or your power supply isnt putting out enough juice.
