Laptops & Notebooks - March 2007

I just got a new laptop for my birthday and I'm going to FL for the week and I want to take some of my older games with me.

Its a brand new Sony VAIO VGN-N100 that my parents bought me right before everything went Vista so I would not try to toss it out of a window (but of course they waited till about 30 minuts ago to give it to me).

Saying that there is a game that I want to play that will run on 98 or even 95 would it be ok to play on a laptop? I know I cant play liek the Sims to and such but just my smaller older games?

My laptop has 2GB of RAM with a Core 2 Duo 1.6Ghz processor. Should I just go ahead and disable paging; meaning bring it down to zero, or should I have about a gig or so of virtual memory? Thanks

I'm going to be my fathers company's File Manager and resource finder, and I'd like to have a laptop/ notebook for keeping and organizing his files from each job he< they> complete. do you have a suggestion on WERE i could find one, and what programs would best suit my needs?

i have wiped the hard drive many times using recovery disks, at first it is really fast but as i install more basic programs it slows down and the start up takes about 15-20mins and sometimes just switches itself off. it is an acer aspire 1360 notebook and is running service pack 2. I took it to a local repair shop but they dont even kow what is wrong with it, he tried different memory, he tried and different hard drive but it still does not wokr.
Any ideas, i ersonnally think it is something deep in the system.

I bought an HP pavillion laptop in the US in February 2007 and have returned it to the UK. I checked before I paid for it that the warranty would cover me in the uk and the shop advised me that it would.

Since I then, my power jack has developed a fault and needs wiggling to connect to the power. The cable is fine.

I contacted HP UK and they have said that the warranty is only for software (this is contradicted in the warranty paperwork) and that I would need to arrange for it to be shipped to the US.

The exact model number is only sold in the states but the basic model is sold in the UK so a basic part such as the power jack would be available. The warranty states it is valid in any country that has support (which the uk has) and that sold the product.

Do you agree that HP should fix it as it is clearly a manufacturing fault?

Has anyone else had this problem?

Do you think HP should honour this warranty?

Hi, I just bought a notebook HP Pavillion 17" Serie 9000. It comes with a an AMD Turion 64x2 TL-52 dual core processor. However, checking the HP web page, it seems like this TL-52 does not exist. Is this a mobile processor? Is it new or old? Is it better than the TL-50. Why then HP only offers TL-50 or TL-56 then? I am freacking out, and HP doesn not give me answers? Should i return this computer?

I turned my pc off the other day and it gave me and error while shutting down. I didn't think anything of it. Usually some program is still on and its telling me its going to end now. I went to try and use my pc a few hours later and when I tried to turn it back on it loaded almost all the way up then a msg would appear saying "preparing to stand by" and it would turn it self back "off" only to try and restart it self. It kept doing that all night. Eventually I unplugged it because it was driving me nuts and this way the battery would die and it would stop doing it. I plugged it in to recharge it and now it won't turn back on.

Any ideas what could be wrong?? I need my laptop for work. It's an older Compaq.

My Dell Inspiron 1405 is set to dim the monitor when operating on battery power. I can't find this setting among the other power management options. Any idea how I can undo it? Thanks!

1- When it is due out?

2- I want the $1300 current Macbook with 1G Ram and 80 GB hard drive and a dvd burner. If i wait for the newer Macbooks will their prices be high cuz they are new? Will i still be able to get a new macbook w/ the specs listed above for around $1300-$1400?

3- Is that enough RAM for Leopard?

4- I will need a student office software but I dont want to spend the $150 if I can avoid it. I heard good things about Neo Office for Mac and I'll consider downloading that for free. But will that be a problem for school? If my professor makes a powerpoint using Microsoft Office can I open it using Neo Office on my Mac? What about word documents? Can I type a paper in Neo office and send it to my professor who has Microsoft Word? Or will he have a problem accessing it correctly?

5- What is new other than Leopard and that time machine thing?

6- Is the processor going to be new? If so, how far advanced beyond the current core 2 duo?

i only have 384 mb of ram on my compac presario 2002 w/ a turion 64. It took me about 25 minutes to post this question from startup. Where is the best place to go an how much to get adequate ram? how much is that?
