Go to Tech Depot and on the left there is a memory finder. It will tell you the maximum ram your computer will hold and the type.

Hi Craig W
It may not be a popular idea but why not go to a PC World store and ask the question? You will get professional advice, and you will know that the memory will be the right sort for your machine. Yes you could probably buy the ram cheaper on the Internet but what guarantees do you have that you will not damage your machine? Some laptops have the memory under the keyboard! removing that for an upgrade can be spooky - believe me.

Memory prices are tumbling, so the savings you might make in buying the memory on the internet and fitting it yourself is small compared to the risks you run.

Whichever way you go, be happy

Its important that you get the correct type speed and amount of ram. If you go to the link some people have already mentioned http://www.crucial.com/uk they can check your computer on line. They will recommend the best amount for your machine. If you order on line they will send fitting instructions. It's worth spending a little more on ram from Crucial as they guarantee compatibility with your motherboard and give an excellent warranty. Hope this helps.

Assuming it is still under warranty: If you do have a free slot (i.e. you have a 512MB chip in your laptop), then you can buy another 512MB chip from Dell and they will tell you how to put it in, without voiding your warranty.

If it is not under warranty and you do have a free slot: then like the other posts here suggest, you can buy another 512MB chip. On the bottom of the laptop (usually toward the middle) there will be a small "compartment", usually held in with 1 screw, for the memory. There you can install the other chip.

If your motherboard can support it you would open the bottom of the case where it is marked for the memory and put it in. Crucial.com has a utility that will check your system and find if you can add more memory.
