Run a defrag on your C: drive.

Also, run MSConfig and remove (untick) processes that are not required by your system. You can identify what is safe to remove by searching their name at www.castlecops.com

Lastly get CrapCleaner from www.ccleaner.com and run both a clean and find problem.

As well as those recommended, think yourself about what programs you really need, particularly those starting up. Do you really need Winamp, the Office Language Bar, your Bluetooth stack, ITunes, and so on starting up each time your computer starts? Most of these are going to be loaded when you open an associated file anyway, and therefore stopping these services could save you a few seconds on the startup time.

To stop services you can also use Start > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services. A lot of the Windows services, such as Error Reporting, IIS, Security Center, and some of the networking ones use up system resources and hog startup time when they're not actually of any use.

Check your boot priority (your BIOS will have this), and set the CD as first option, then the hard drive, leaving network and floppy till last. CD first as it allows you to run Windows Setup in the future without difficulty should you need it.

Remove unnecessary icons from your desktop and clean the Registry (as mentioned above). Saves time loading the Registry on startup. Also disable any automatically run scheduled tasks that you don't strictly need - for example, disable virus checking on startup, as long as you have checking on each file open it'll be fine. Disable auto-connect to the internet unless you really need it and can't spare the few seconds it'll take later.

Do the simplest things first, scan disk, defrag. And, run defrag a couple of times in a row. Download Spybot, run it.

Your computer has to have enough room on the hard drive to move around, if your disk is extremely full, it's going to slow everything down.

Transfer your music to your disc or compress some of the files you don't use very often.

Run a registry cleaner.
