My laptop has 2GB of RAM with a Core 2 Duo 1.6Ghz processor. Should I just go ahead and disable paging; meaning bring it down to zero, or should I have about a gig or so of virtual memory? Thanks

Keep paging enabled....i would say if you had 4gb+ go ahead and disable paging, otherwise keep it on.

No don't disable virtual memory
If you disable the page file you'll get no performance gain you'll just cause it to crash while you're doing something memory intensive, windows will only use the page file when it needs to so leave it enabled

i would NOT remove paging since windows basiccaly does a good job of managing your memory,
what i would do is go start | rt. click on my computer | advanced tab | under performance setting button | advnced tab | then the change button | then select the system managed size button which will automatically change your paging file depending on how much you need.

well., right click on the my computer icon.
you will see properties - > click advanced tab - > click settings in performance tab. choose you want to determine the performance.

performance of your computer depend on virtual memory usage. if you allow window to decide or allow it to be used for visual best option it will slow down ur comp.

so use user preference. and enable only ones u want.

all this answer is applicable only if u use windows.. ok..
