I replaced my hard drive and reinstalled windows XP from the disk that came with it but now I can only restart and turn off, what did I miss?

You probably have not installed the graphics display drivers of the laptop.

If your hibernate option is disabled when you click the start>turn off computer button, you surely haven't installed the graphics drivers and hence is not supported.

If you have already installed the graphics drivers, then you will need to set up the option manually.

right click on desktop > select properties > screen saver > power (button at the bottom)
make your changes accordingly.

you should enable hibernate option.

1.Type Power Options in Start menu and hit enter.
2.In the left pane, open the link labeled “Change when the computer sleeps” and then open the link “Change advanced power settings”.
3. Under the Advanced Sleep options, expand the Sleep tree and turn off Hybrid Sleep.
4.Now go back to Start menu to see the new Hibernate entry. That’s it!

for hibernating right click on desktop & open properties--then go on screen saver tab -- click on power in Moniter power column. Now in power saving options click on hibernate & afterwards choose the settings as desired by u.

you can't just close the laptop and make it sleep??
