HP or Dell, they are both good. I have a Dell laptop, it works great for me.

It is funny how you received a lot of answers from people who said Dell is made of poor quality and easily break. Such comments made me laugh.
So, my first computer that was given to me by my grandmother was Dell desktop. It is now 8 years now. Honestly, I have never repaired it!!! And it still works like brand new!!! Yeah, it is a Dell, the same product some of the people here said was garbage.
Anyway, my school gave me a Dell desktop for complting a school program for free. The desktop is now 5 years old, and I haven't repaired it once!!! Remember, it is a Dell...
I decided to buy a notebook, so I purchase an Insprion 8600 in 04. Believe me or not, it has never given me a problem!!! Remember it is a Dell.
I decided to upgrade to a newer laptop recently. I went to Wal*Mart, Bestbuy, Circuit-City and played with all of their Compaq, HP, Sony notebooks; I even went to the apple store to check out their Macbook Pro. Unfortunately, none of those new notebooks felt as great as my old Dell Inspiron notebook, so I decided to shop with Dell again... I ordered the XPS 1210, the 12" notebook, and believe me or not, the little notebook is 100% better than my old Dell notebook, and it feels 1000% better than those Compaq, HP, Toshiba, Sony notebooks I played with in the stores. Yes, my little new XPS 1210 feels much better than the Macs!!!
The Keyboard alone would make you fall in love within seconds. Ask anyone who owns one. Man, I had planned to return the XPS 1210 if I didn't like it, but heck, I fell in love immediately after I turned it on.
The color is so attractive, the black back and silver, the shinny silver looking color, makes the notebook have a resplendent look.
The Notebook never looked so attractive on the Dell Wedsite. That's why I planned to return it if I didn't like it. Heck, trust me, the most attractive notebook I have ever seen.
You can access your HHD media files, such as music and photos without booting up Vista!!! This means you can watch Movies without having to boot up windows Vista.
The little notebook is also GREAT on gaming. I haven't had a problem with it so far. It is only 4 days old.
Again, Dell makes inexpensive computers for the poor, and expensive computer for the rich... Anybody who says Dell computers are cheap has no idea what he/she is talking about. Tell me if $4,000 is cheap. Yes, the Dell XPS 1710 costs more than $4,000, and that is not cheap.
I highly recommend Dell... HP is like a Honda civic car, while Compaq is like a Hyundai, and Sony is like a Toyota Camry, while Dell is like a Mercedes Benz or BMW. You only need to get the feeling of the notebook to see for yourself.
Alienware is Dell. Yes, Dell owns Alienware. Alienware is great, but many people say their Aleinware notebooks have fried, which is true.
I highly recommend Dell... I have been a Dell customer over 8 years, it doesn't seem I will switch.
Best regard.

Okay. Let's cut through the hype. As a general matter, you get what you pay for. Period. So let's look at your standard $1,000 laptop. Alienware is "game-leaning." They're more likely to focus on graphics and speed, but not necessarily compatibility/reliability, like a Subaru WRX. Dell on the other hand, focuses on compatibility/reliability rather than speed. With Dell you're more likely to get a Chevrolet. Understand the analogy? So the sales mentality often shakes out like this. People by their first computer based on the hardware they admire, and thereafter they buy based on the software they're likely to run. We all drool over the Ferraris, but some of us are going to drive the Autobahn, and some of us are going to drive the kids to soccer. Once you've decided which kind of computer driver you are, check the warranties and the service fine print. CALL THE SERVICE NUMBER ON A FRIDAY EVENING AND SEE WHAT HAPPENS. Find out who's speaking knowledgeably and intelligibly in Mumbai at 6 AM on a Saturday morning. Good luck. :-)

Toshiba satellite
Made with some good parts. Seems reliable, AWESOME tech support, available at many good retail stores that accept returns on problem computers (it's a fact of life that a computer may be BORN DEAD, so a return policy is IMPORTANT)
HP
Again, made with some good parts and seems reliable. Pretty good tech support and also available at a number of good retail stores that accept returns.
Dell
Have some of their own off-beat ideas. Laptops are mechanically POOR, and batteries that EXPLODE. The three levels of support is what kills you. So unless you love to be ON HOLD, listening to their MUSIC on HOLD, then AVOID DELL.
Alienware
The word is AWESOME. But Alienware and Awesome are not in the same category as BUDGET.
You see, I believe that with laptops, GO CHEAP. They break, are expensive to FIX, are the MOST Stolen item in America, expensive to Upgrade and generally are NOT as good as a Desktop. So if you really don't go anywhere with it, GET A DESKTOP. But if you MUST, then GO CHEAP.
With Windows Vista, aim for 2GB of RAM. So if you BUY CHEAP, get more RAM right away, and it will be just fine.
Good luck and Happy Computing!

Both Hp and dell are great. Hp has been trusted for many years and has a J.D. Power and Associates Award. Although they are a very good company their computers can be quite expensive. Dell has won 5 awards forts laptops and they are very quite cheap.

I love my HP. I had a Toshiba and it was pretty good, but the screen on the HP is much nicer. Dells are good, but you will probably end up paying more. HP and Toshiba are easily available at retail stores and go on sale pretty regularly.

HP is probably your best bet
alienware are kick *** (best in my opinion) but are way too expensive for what you want in them
toshibas are cheap and you get what you pay for
dell- plan on buying another one next week
HP they are good reliable machines and are very well priced
i recommend a dual core, 1gb ram and a 17in screen, 80gb hdd
probably the most inportant thing about laptops is to BUY A WARRANTY

Sitting outside right now on the patio with a glass of tea with my HP notebook... which cost much less than Dell. here's my only complaint. It came with Norton Security... free for six months. Then all of a sudden, I could not access the internet. My tech says to just disable Norton... which I did... now there is no problem. So, beware of Norton.... even free Norton !!

I hate my satelite computer and my son loves his del. This cheap computer can't play any graphic games and even word-processing is a burden. i own two satelite and both stink. I am not going to buy another one and make it three. I will try a del, should have listen to my son's advice he is a computer student and he relay pushes his computer. The only way I can push this computer is of ft the desk and into the trash can.
when i did a test on this laptop it had 1 and 2 on all grades on running. It just sucks.
