Hardware - September 2007

OK so I've got a desktop that the harddrive apparently has crashed. And I've got another computer that is supposedly in good working order (it's not mine, so I haven't turned it on yet) and I want to take the other computer and take it apart and put the harddrive in my old computer and kind of rebuild it. The computer I'll be taking parts from is a Dell Dimension XPS R450 and the other computer is a HP Pavillion 6623. Both had Windows 98 on them, unless the Dell has been upgraded (I'll have to check it). I know they both use the same kind of ram so that is cool to combine that...but if I put the harddrive from the dell into the HP, what exactly is going to happen? I've never done this particular thing before, will the windows on the dell boot up in the HP? Etc? I suppose I'll have to find the drivers for the stuff on the HP on the net cause some parts I can't move over cause the difference in the tower. Any tips or anything? It's my pet project lol.

My computer is running slowly and it is coming up saying my computer is not optimized. What would that statement mean? It also says a movie is still running making my computer slow. I don't know what all this means. Can anyone help me out?

Hey everybody! I'm looking for a new computer now cause my old one sucks. I was just wondering if there are any computer that is under $400 with at least a Intel Pentium 4 processor, 1 gig of RAM, and a good graphics card, not those cheap built in ones (I'm looking for any in the nVidia GeForce 7 series). i have pentium dual core 2.8 Ghz 1024 DDR 1 RAM . i am not going to get vista ever i think . my graphics option is intel extreme graphics 2 on a intel 865 motherboard ..... how long can i pull XP on this till tech overtakes me completely ( i am not a gamer exccept ChessMaster 10 th ED and no use getting a graphics card for S TV out to a TV since the video is never good unless i have HDTV ) ... so look into your crystal ball and give me a ballpark figure please

I already have a home-built PC with the P4 chip in it at 2.8gHz All I need to do is swap the motherboards. I have everythijng else.

I own a legal "OEM copy" of a DELL disk that only works on a DELL motherboard, which should have an embedded CD-Key in the bios.

So, if I buy a Dell motherboard for about $25.00, I can have the latest version of Windows XP SPK2 and all of the available update from microsoft.

This disk has worked on my buddies Dell laptop, and a friend's DELL desktop. Both which have crashed or were corrupted by viruses.

Hmmm, I was wondering I was gonna get a new graphics card, but I see several graphics card use ddr, ddr2, ddr3 and etc. memory. Do I need to know if my computer can support ddr 1 2 3 or 4? If so, how do I find out if which my computer supports? Or if I just need to know if my motherboard uses and agp slot, pci, or pci-E slot.

I have the Sims 2 for my pc, but my cd drive will break anything that goes in it, so i downloaded an expansion pack but it says its not installed and it only applies to that expansion pack, whats wrong?? dont tell me that i havent installed it yet, cuz ive tried.
and is it cuz i need the original in there? can i download that too and will it work then?

in other words: a way to play the sims 2 and nightlife without any CDs. (downloading them perhaps?)idk!!

I have a toshiba satellite T2130CS. I there any way to put window XP on it or ME? It has no cd rom drive just a floppy and no usb port. I there way to add a usb port so i can add an external cd drive? I just can't affor a new laptop so i am trying to update this one.

Ok so i got this old outdated Toshiba laptop. Its a Toshiba Satellite T2130CS. Has no CD drive but it does have a floppy drive. I really want to surf the internet on it because that is pretty much all its good for. I have a USRobotics cellular card. Its kinda old. What u do with it is plug it into the side of the laptop press a button and a phone jack pops out for a phone cord. But any ways how do i get the darn thing online. I was looking through it and found an internet browser. I clicked it and it told me that i needed to put in the windows 95 floppy disk. Where can i get one for cheap or even free? Also is there a floppy I could get with an internet browser like mozilla fire fox or internet explorer on it. If i did get the internet browser on it would i be able to put a wireless wifi card in it and would it work?

Hi I have a laptop with this processor, could someone tell me if it can be replaced with a new core 2 duo processor. I have a nvidia Ge Force FX 5200 and currently am using 2 monitors for the dual monitor feature. it also has an s-video out. I was wondering if i could also use a tv through the s-video and have 3 monitors?
I think thats my only choice since my pc on can hold 1 video card and since its watt capacity inst that high for newer video cards.

if not is there such thing as a splitter that not only duplicates the image but adds another screen? (i highly doubt that lol)

If i can do the 3 monitor set up using my current video card, is there a converter that will convert s-video to vga or svga? ( i kinda doubt that but don't know lol)

I'm looking into a good desktop computer. My price range is 1,000 to 1,500. Maybe just a little more. I want to be able to run AIM, Zune, Internet explorer, and an online game like Counter-strike or WoW without lag. Hi. My Gigabyte S-Series mainbourd has 4 SATA ports and only one IDE port. My problem is that my current hard drive and cd/dvd drive are both IDE however with only one IDE port I cannot hook both of them to the same port. Where can I get a sata cd/dvd reader/writer drive? The stores in my area are Circuit City / Future Shop, BestBuy, PC Club, CompUSA, among others whom do you recommend I buy the drive from, what brand should I get, and why?
