For your uses and not moving to Vista, it will last you as long as Microsoft supports XP with updates.

Your system will not go obsolete as long as you stick to your mentioned usage. You can use it as long as you like even microsoft stop support supporting XP which will not happen down next 5 years.

For hardware wise, usually it can stay for 5 years too before you have hard time finding replacement for faulty parts.

Generally, people are taking 5 years as a worth life time for a computer.

Many are outdated when you buy them.
Yours is already, with the advent of the Intel core 2 duo next generation that supports 802.11n technology.
Normally in less than 6 months there outdated.
