Click Start, click Run, type dxdiag, ok. Select Sound tab. If your device and driver details are not shown, you need to reinstall the driver. If they are shown, test for sound. If still no sound, try either the back or front panel connectors.

Make sure your speaker jack is plugged into the correct jack. Usually color coded with a light green on newer model computers and a darker green on older models. If the audio card is way old then you will have to look at the card as all the jacks are usually black.

Also go into the Multimedia or Sounds and Multimedia in the Control Panel and click on that and go in and make sure your settings correspond with your hardware.

Your Audio card may have given up the ship and you may need a new card. Test the card in another computer or try a new card in your computer.

If you have a card that is in a PCI slot make sure that particular PCI slot is working try another slot. Make sure you pull card out and reinstall after cleaning card contacts with rubbing alcohol.

Make sure your bios is set to the correct setting especially if you have onboard audio.

You may need to reinstall the driver.

Check to make sure the hardware is recognized by the computer, if not reinstall hardware.

Give them all a try, its all about troubleshooting. Good Luck!

Well, it can be software... but it can also be hardware. Check your speakers. Try connecting it to another pc or to a player(i.e. mp3 players). If speaker is not working on player, clean it, specially the potentiometer. THe VOlume. If it works on player and not on your pc, try connecting the jack again and move it. The connection on the motherboard might be loose. If these doesn't help, contact your local vendor. Both speaker and Motherboard =).
