Hardware - March 2007

The keyboard on my home computer has stopped working and im not sure what to replace it with. Any tips?

It was custom made for me in 98 and has been upgraded since but when I try to add new software it says I don't have room. The cd rom won't read burned cd's and it's really slow. I've tried to use my defragmenter and it goes as far as 3% then starts over so I can't even use it to help clean things up. I've considered adding more hard drive but am unsure if that will help or maybe a new processer is what I need. I'm pretty illiterate when it comes to these things and I'm hoping for help understanding. I would like to just get a new one but I can't afford to get one with all the software I have now. Can anybody help me understand?

Got rid of Windows Me. Too big a pain. Bought a used Mac - I think )Os5?, not sure. And did not come with a manual. I am clueless about Macs, but heard they were better. Boots up fine, cursor moves around, get stuff in the corner (icons) Other box tells me I'm not connected to internet. Then I get "Open transport error occurred -3259." Then everything locks up, cursor won't move. What's it mean? And where can I get a manual or learn how to use it? Nobody I know owns a Mac. Even the electronics store here says he doesn't know anything either, he's never had one come in to the shop. So I gotta go to my friend's to use her computer until I can learn how to use the Mac. Thanks everybody. Heck, I don't even know how to turn it off, so I have to unplug it 'cause I can't shut it down on the screen, and it restarts whenever I hit the other little button.

I have a Dell 1501. When I put it into sleep mode, I can't figure out how to wake it back up. I move the mouse, press keys, and nothing happens. I have to close the lid and open it again to wake it up. There's got to be a better way...

i have a 40x max compact disk drive and its not responding. I think that one of the wiers are lose. Even when on go on my computer it gives me all my drive execpt the d:/. But thw drivw open up. help is needed. THANKS

I always wondered if there was a way to set the "F" keys on the top of my keyboard to do the tasks that I wished such as open an internet browser or open another application. Is there such a way to do this task?

I have a few (13) computers in my house and i want to upgrade one of them. i am not a newbie as i build computers regularly and do lots of other computer stuff. I know that if you take a windows harddrive and put it in another computer it wont boot because the hardware isnt the same. However im upgrading my processor which requires me upgrading my mobo and im upgrading my ram and possibly adding a video card. will the same windows still run after all the hardware changes?!?!?!?

I'm looking for laptops for college and my campus is wireless capable, but the dorm rooms don't have a great wireless signal. The college uses ethernet cables for its network so I need to make sure the laptop contains a port for ethernet connection. If not do you know of any adapters I could buy? I know you can get a wireless router but they seem kind of expensive.

I have an NVIDIA GeForce MX 440 graffics card and windows XP media center. There is only one plug on the back of the computer for the monitor.. so how do i go about hooking up a second monitor? I used to have my tv pluged into the rca out.. so I know it's capable of splitting the screen.. but dont' know how to physically hook up the second monitor.. and actually don't remember how to get to the area where I can split the screen in the settings. PLEASE HELP!! Thanks!

I need to know the pinout voltages (Ground, 5V & return) of a BFRSR81 2.5 Ampere power supply. The pins are arrainged in a triangle. I think the top one is ground. What are the other two? Please tell me how you measured them so I do not get them reversed in the classic mirror image mistake. i.e. looking at the cable or looking at the pins on the back of the router.

Is this normal? What do I do? Should I just reinstall (which I can do - my data is backed up) and use the whole 8GB hd instead of partitioning? It is old (~5 years guessing) and connected via IDE (internal). I'm running Ubuntu 6.10 Desktop version.
