Could be several things. Look verrrrry carefully and see if you can see the images that SHOULD be there. If you CAN see it, then it means the backlight for your LCD has failed. Either that, or the connection for the backlight is bad.

It could also be the connection from the motherboard to the display. It could either be bad, or it could have come loose, at either end.

If the laptop is powering on, and nothing is showing up, then it could also mean that there is a problem with the motherboard, which is why it's not POSTing. The POST is the Power On Self Test. This is the very first screen you see when you power on the laptop, which would usually have the laptop's Logo on it, like Dell or IBM.

Take the laptop by someone who knows what they're doing, and let them fix it for you. ;)

what kind of laptop do you have??
I have an older VAIO and it started to do that a lot...the screen would just go black but it wouldnt be turned off (you could still barely see) I got a new battery

battery dead. graphics card messed up. or your computer could simply be in standby... have you tried pressing the power button?

it probably shuts down to save the power.

It means that it is off or "hibernating" or you have a blank screensaver.
